LYCEUM Northwestern University Dukes needed the extra five minutes in disposing BBEAL Season 27 champion University of Baguio and earn the last final seat in the open bracket of the 8th Panagbenga Invitational Basketball Tournament.
Trailing the entire three quarters, Lyceum forced their way to a 105-100 victory in overtime at the Easter College Gym Sunday afternoon.
Maynard Bona and Rodcel Yanga combined for 35 huge points down the stretch including ten that kick started the Dagupan based team’s searing run during the extension.
“We extended outside our limits this time, we almost fell short but the boys came away as winners because of their perseverance and hard work,” said Lyceum coach Juliuz Puzon.
The Cardinals were up by one, 91-92, with 12.1 seconds remaining then added another 1 from the free throw area. Lyceum’s George Alipio then recovered the loose ball after a miss by the Baguio based dribblers and scored an easy lay-up to tie the ball game at 93 all.
“We were running out of time but I just told the boys to recover the basket and happily Alipio converted his lay-up,” Puzon said.
“That was almost the last game plan that we had, fortunately UB was drained of their lead players during the overtime,” Puzon added.
The Cardinals closed the first half with a 12 point advantage, 33-45, behind Kendrick Basan, Darien Ocassion, and Noel Cathedral who all combined for 24 points in the first 20 minutes of the ball game.
UB stayed on top at the end of the third period with a precarious 64-69 that saw the Cardinals firing five triples from beyond the arc.
But the visiting Lyceum squad was not easily shaken as Yanga, Lloyd Dollaga, and Julius Palaganas rallied in the payoff canto and combined for 24 points to chip UB’s lead at 86-90 with 1:07 remaining in the regulation.
Basan led the Cardinals with 24 points, five steals, and four rebounds before fouling out in the 4:10 mark of the fourth period. Catheral came up with a double-double performance on 14 points and 12 boards, while Ocassion and Ranzae Cosme added 19 and 15 points accordingly.
Dollaga scored 24 points for Lyceum as Yanga chipped in 18, Bona added 17, while Alipio and Palaganas each had 15 points.
