IN WHAT could be the biggest fight of his young mix martial arts career, Sadanga, Mt. Province pride Mark Eddiva gets another crack at the largest and considered as the Olympic of the sport, the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Eddiva’s three-round triumph against Jumabieke Tuerxun in his first UFC fight earned him another ticket and will face Edimilson “Kevin” Souza in the preliminary card of UFC Fight Night 42, which is scheduled to happen at Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil on May 31.

The 28-year-old bemedalled Wushu fighter of Team Lakay kept his unblemished record at 6-0 after getting the judges nod during UFC’s Macau fight night and his longest fight after having five stoppages, four of which came in the first round.

Eddiva’s bout against Tuerxun was his first in more than three years debuting in 2006, fought once in 2007, twice in 2009 and once in 2011 before signing with the UFC this year.

“We’re focusing on Mark’s striking this time although bumabalik na yung speed niya, marami pa rin kaimng dapat gawin kasi matagal din siyang di lumaban talaga,” said Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao.

Just like Eddiva, Souza (14-3) also had his UFC debut in September last year when he outpointed Felipe Arantes via split decision at UFC Fight Night 28.

Souza is a notorious Brazilian knockout artist as he thumped 12 of his 17 opponents with his deadly punching prowess.

“Isa sa mga mahirap na laban ito para kay Mark, but like any fighter, may makikita din kaming kahinaan ni Souza at yun siguro yung pag aaralan namin,” added Sangiao.

Eddiva is the second homegrown Filipino to be signed by UFC as he leaned on his solid striking game and takedown defenses to score a unanimous decision victory to achieve what his fellow Team Lakay teammate Dave Galera failed to do.

Galera, the first pure bred Filipino to see action in the UFC, lost to Royston Wee in his debut in UFC Fight Night 34 early in January this year in Singapore.

Filipino Americans Mark Munoz and Brandon Vera have been popular mainstays of UFC, which is the industry leader and a pioneer in the sport gaining mainstream acceptance.

The event will be headlined by a light heavyweight bout between current TUF: Brazil 3 coaches Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen.
