CLOSE to 400 aspiring young basketeers answered the call in the 2014 Coca-Cola PBA Young Stars Basketball Baguio leg tryouts at the UB Cardinals gym held April 8.

Supervised by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), the tryouts aim to scout promising talents to represent the summer capital for the regional tournament slated April 20 to May 7.

SBP North Central Luzon head Danny Soria said he is overwhelmed with the number of the participants who took their time to participate.

“We are expecting a good number to be present here today but I guess it turned out even better than what we have expected,” Soria said.

Soria added because of the support and participation of the junior basketball enthusiasts, he is optimistic the event will continue to enjoy good support in the following years.

“The outcome was good and I guess the sponsors for this event will continue to support and give chance to our youngsters in the years to come,” Soria added.

The event, backed by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and Coca-Cola, is now in its third year and it is the first time that Baguio was chosen as one of tryout venues in Northern Luzon, apart from Pangasinan and Pampanga.

The event was graced by former city mayor Peter Rey Bautista, who delivered the inspirational message for the young participants.

“Many of our country’s great basketball players started in this very same gym, I hope one day many of you will be part of the list that started their footprints in here,” Bautista said.

The Baguio qualifiers will then advance to the North Luzon Leg where they will compete with other champions from Pangasinan and Pampanga.

Teams must consist of 12 players with three members each born in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 only.

The regional champion will go against the titlists from Northern Luzon, Southern Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao and Metro Manila (top two finishers) in the national finals slated May 18-25.

Southern Luzon is comprised of Laguna, Cavite and Batangas while Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga consist Mindanao.
