ST. JOSEPH lives another day by cutting Team Jireh’s twice to beat advantage with a 94-87 victory in their bracket C semis match in the 8th Panagbenga Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament.

After trailing by six at the end of the first period, 18 – 24, St. Joseph sparked a ferocious flare in the second quarter and never looked back to force a rubber match Tuesday evening at the Easter College gym.

“Naunahan lang nila kami during the first quarter, actually we were a little worried since late dumating yung ibang teammates and be careful with foul troubles,” St. Joseph team captain Bem Pimentel said who started the game with only six players.

Pimentel added the team will have to push harder in order to advance to the finals.

“We came out strong tonight but just to be a little careful maybe we will need to perform better in game two since we know the other team will be targeting to get back on us,” Pimentel added.

St. Joseph rallied towards their first lead of the night after scoring a 12-6 run in the second period, 31-30, behind Bhogs Gatbonton and Dave Stapely with 4:11 left in the clock.

Jireh then managed to stay close and tied the ballgame at 42 all with 28 seconds left, after Emil Tomas converted six straight points.

But St. Joseph managed to stay in front after Gatbonton converted a last second shot from the long range placing them in front at the close of the first half, 45-42.

St. Joseph continued its rampage in the third canto as Pimentel, Jonas Gacula, and Alvin Alindoza chipped in 16 points that brought them to a double digit lead, 69-55, at the end of the period.

Jireh staged a comeback at the start of the pay-off canto as Noel Berjay, Zaldy Rillera, and Bryan Abellera narrowed the gap to 81-77, but Pimentel, Stapely and Ralph Mendoza later on combined for another 13 points to put the game away.

Stapely displayed an all-around performance scoring 22 points, seven rebounds, and six blocks, while Alindoza, Pimentel, Gatbonton, and Gacula added 22, 17, 14, and 13 points respectively.

Berjay led the scorers for Jireh with 21 points, Rillera added another 16, while Kitz Ocawe and Bong Rillera converted 13 points apiece. (Mark Victor Pasagoy)
