DESPITE failing to defend the national crown, the University of the Cordilleras Lady Jaguars softball team still ranked among the best teams in the recently concluded 2014 Private Schools Athletic Association National Finals held in Tagum City, Davao April 6-12.

UC athletic director Ruel Costina said the team will still be one of the possible title contender in 2015.

"If given the chance to represent the CAR delegation next year, the softball team of UC is still eyed as the one of the best teams to compete in the said sport," Costina said.

Swinging to a second place finish against their earnest rival Western Visayas, the UC Lady Jaguars displayed an earlier superb performance after sweeping the eliminations with a 4 - 0 record.

"Even without a formal coach to head the team this year, the ladies went to the finals. Unfortunately they only came to second place but all in all this was one of their beast feat," Costina said.

Former champion Central Philippine University blanked the Lady Jaguars in five innings, 8-0, to reclaim the championship crown.

Last year, the UC Jaguars team under coach Joel Panes came away with the crown against the same CPU squad, 4-3.

The softball team generated nine silver medals, together with special citations for the best performing players during the week long competition.

Senior player, Liezel Tanding was given an award for most stolen bases, while rookie teammate Maria Christina Satrain bagged the best slugger and most home runs award.

"We still carry superb athletes in our team, hopefully during the next regional eliminations, the UC softball team will remain as the top performers," Costina said.
