JUNIOR cagers from Baguio City and Benguet opened their title hunt earlier this week in a bid to join the regional finals and hopefully in the nationals of the 2014 Coca-Cola PBA Young Stars Basketball Tournament – Baguio Leg.

Ten local squads from the different high schools test their mettle for the right to represent Baguio for the upcoming regionals slated next month of the tournament supervised by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.

“The champion in the tournament will have an all expense paid for the regional finals and face other champions from North – Central Luzon,” said to SBP North Central Luzon Head and tournament director Danny Soria.

Some 400 13-16 years of age basketeers joined the try-outs on April 8 who were later on culled to form the 10 teams.

The event, backed by the Philippine Basketball Association and Coca-Cola Company is now on its third year and it is the first time that Baguio was chosen as one of the stops in Northern Luzon.

Soria added with the support and participation of the local community’s junior basketball enthusiast, he is optimistic the event will continue to come up in the city next year.

“The outcome during the try-outs came better than expected and I guess the sponsors for this event will continue to support in giving chance to our youngsters in the years to come,” Soria quipped.

The Baguio Leg is expected to hold its championship game at the UB Cardinals gym on April 30.

The winner in the leg will advance to the North Central Luzon Leg and will compete with other regional champions from Pangasinan and Pampanga.

All teams consist of 12 players with three members each born in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 only.

The regional champion will then go to the National Finals against the titlists from Southern Luzon, Mindanao and Metro Manila before advancing to the National Finals slated May 18-25.

Southern Luzon will be comprised of Laguna, Cavite and Batangas, while the Mindanao side consists of Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga.
