THE University of Cordilleras Laboratory High School emerged as the best junior cager squad in the city as the 2014 Coca-Cola PBA Young Stars-Baguio Leg closed Wednesday afternoon at the University of Baguio Cardinals gym.
The UC Junior Jaguars-Team B disposed rival Saint Louis University Laboratory High School, 84-68, to advance in the regional finals of the competition supervised by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
Robert Castro finished with 25 points while Jon Ric Buenaventura added another 23 points teaming together as they lead UCLHS to another championship.
“We are happy that once again we came at the top of the competition, the boys did very well defending each of the opponents attempts and our lead scores really attacked the basket that gave us big leads,” UC coach Rommillie Garcia said.
Garcia added the team will prepare harder for the regional finals in a chance to steal the limelight during the nationals.
“Kailangan na paghandaan ang susunod na leg, this will be interesting since we don’t know much who we’ll be facing from Pampanga and Pangasinan but surely we will go for the win,” Garcia said.
“Right now we’ll give our boys enough rest but training will be still done especially na maninibago nanaman sa klima ang mga bata lalo at kami ang dadayo sa lugar nila,” Garcia added.
UC opened the ballgame on a high note and ended the opening canto with a ten point advantage, 27-17, as Castro and Buenaventura combined for 17 points to lead SLU High.
SLU then tried to cut the lead early in the second period as Lyndon Matbagan and Carl Ochabilla combined for 11 points, but UC pulled of the necessary stops that gave them a nine-point edge at the close of the first half, 45-34.
SLU once again tried to generate a spark of hope in the third canto but the junior Jaguars continued to attack the baskets posting their biggest lead at 15 point gap to end the period with a 64-49 lead.
Matbagan led SLU with 18 points, while Ochabilla and Luis Lising added 14 points apiece.
