REIGNING women's North Face 100 women's 50 kilometer champion Sandi Menchi Abahan is set to banner the Summer Capital during the triathlon event of the upcoming Philippine National Games in Manila May 16-25.

Primed as one of Baguio's finest entry to the 2014 PNG, Abahan will be the sole representative of the city in the event backed by the Department of Education, Philippine Olympic Committee and the National Sports Association in partnership with the Department of Interior and Local Government.

"I guess subukan ko rin munang mag-level up ng sports event aside from plain ultramarathon and trail running competitions," Abahan said.

The BS Education student from the University of the Cordilleras said she will take the chance of improving her skills during the week-long competition.

"Mas mahirap pero kakayanin, magkaiba ng kaunti sa challenges but all in all same pa rin naman kasi sa huli it all goes the same of pushing and testing your limitations. Hopefully makasilat ng medal for Baguio City," Abahan said.

The city will send some 250 total numbers of delegates to compete against 16 other regions of the country with more than 40 athletes for the different athletics events alone.

Meanwhile city sports coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said all preparations for the annual national sporting event are already good to go.

“So far okay na lahat from departure including transportation, uniforms and all. Siguro ang kailangan na lang pag-tuunan ng pansin ay yung dagdagan ng encouragement and support ang lahat ng dadalhin nating atleta,” Gonzales said.

According to POC-PSC, together with the regular competitions PNG 2014 will coincide with PHILSPADA (Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled) national competitions.

A total of 46 sport events will be tapped in the national competition including archery, badminton, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, billiards, boccio, bowling, boxing, kayak, chess, cycling, dancesport, diving, fencing, football, futsal, goalball, golf, gymnastics, judo, karatedo, lawn tennis, motocross, muay thai, pencak silat, powerlifting, rugby football, sailing, sepak takraw, shooting, soft tennis, softball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, volleyball, wall climbing, water polo, weight lifting, wind surfing, wrestling, and wushu.

The PSC-Philippine National Games aims to assess the expanse of the potentials of athletes to be a possible basis for the selection for the competition of national and international pool.
