SOME 250 athletes 15 years old and above from the Summer Capital troop to Metro Manila Thursday to vie for honors as the 2014 Philippine National Games kicks on May 16-25.

With the annual sports spectacle joined by the different regions all over the country, Baguio City will once again open its medal hunt in 46 different sport events on tap for the 2014 edition of PNG.

City sports coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales is optimistic on the performance of the city athletes who will display their toughness during the ten-day sports competition.

"So far, together with the coaches and athletes representing the different sports, are positive with our goal to improve, maybe retain, or at least come up with the same number of gold medals as last year," Gonzales said.
Last year Baguio City, had a total of 60 gold, 55 silver, and 66 bronze medals.

"Although walang national ranking with the medal tally for PNG, the city always come with a strong line up of delegations. We are proud that for years we always end with a high note and this will also be targeted for this year," Gonzales said.

Coinciding with the 2014 PNG will be the Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled (PhilSpada), where 50 entries from the city will compete in sports namely swimming, bowling, archery, and athletics.
Meanwhile, the Baguio City Sports Office earmarked a total of P1.5 million to be used for the 2014 PNG and PhilSpada competition.

According to Gonzales, the allocation was a part of the 2014 budget approved by the city council earlier in February.

"We are somewhat lucky here in Baguio since we are allowed to include in our annual budget proposal those kind of expenses. Sa ibang mga provinces although meron din sila mostly last minute na sila hinahanapan,” Gonzales said.

"At least we can be sure with this small amount of help from the city, iyong mga tinawag nating mga athletes to represent us will be focused enough with their different events," Gonzales added.
