DESPITE failing to bag the regional crown, University of the Cordilleras Laboratory High School are heads up after salvaging second in the 2014 Luzon regional finals held in Pampanga recently.
The Baguio Leg champion UCLHS junior Jaguars battled a huge Pampanga crowd toe-to-toe in the first three quarters of their match-up only to fall in the pay off period, 95-68, after several key players started to foul out in the fourth canto.
“We were a bit frustrated we never brought home the regionals, but it is okay we learned from the experience and we hope to make a better outing the other time around,” said UCLHS coach Rommillie Gonzales.
Pampanga’s dominace of Pangasinan, 124 – 48, was just an icing on the cake in earning a ticket to the national finals slated later this year.
“Nahirapan din ang mga bata na naki-dayo sa ibang lugar, we cannot do much late in the game kasi almost lahat sila nasa foul trouble entering the second half,” Gonzales said.
After the sorry loss from Pampanga, the junior Jaguars then pounced Pangasinan with an emphatic 90-48 victory.
“Medyo nasayangan ng konti ang team pero okay lang, siguro next year makakabawi. At least yung experience lahat kami may natutunan, malaki rin kasi yung pressure na home crowd ang nagche-cheer against sa amin,” UCLHS shooting guard Robert Castro said.
Supervised by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) and sponsored by Coca-Cola, the PBA Young Stars aims to scout promising young talents to serve as a scouting pool for other national and international competitions.
Now on its third season, Coca-Cola PBA Youngstars handpicked Baguio City as one of its stops in Northern Luzon and promise to return next year with a bigger staging for the sport.
