COLLEGIATE volleyball heats up in this part of the country as the weeklong National Intercollegiate Volleyball Championships gets underway in two separate venues in La Trinidad, Benguet.

A total of 13 teams in the men’s division while nine equally competitive teams in the women’s division will see action in the tournament which ends May 31.

Hatched by the Philippine Volleyball Federation, the week-long tournament will be played at the Cordillera Career Development College and Benguet State University.

The activity, which was also held in the province back in 2011 and now on its 15th year, is an annual volleyball championship of the PVF as part of the grassroots development program aimed to create opportunities for students to showcase and enhance their volleyball skills and abilities.

Highlighting the male squads participating this time around include last year’s defending champion National University, and the runner-up University of the Philippines.

With women’s defending De La Salle University skipping this year’s tournament, first runner-up UP is seen as an early favorite in the tournament also backed by Mikasa.

Adamson University, Philippine Women’s University, and National College of Business and Arts, University of Assumption, Bicol State University, Holy Angels State University, Laguna Polytechnic University (Laguna), Laguna Polytechnic University (Manila), and Emilio Aguinaldo College will also be present in the week-long contest.

Local squads set to challenge include Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League season 27 champions Saint Louis University (men’s) and University of Baguio (women’s).

There will be a single round robin in the preliminary round in both the men’s and women’s divisions with the top eight teams in each division advancing to the quarterfinal round.

The number 1 team after the quarters will then face the number 8 seed, the number 2 facing the number 7 seed, the number 3 going up against the number 6 seed and the number 4 seed battling the number 5 seed.

Winners of the knock-out matches will then advance to the semifinal round in hopes of entering the finals of the tournament.

The tournament also aims to give way for sports talents to be considered a spot in the National Youth Volleyball Team.
