COMMUNITY peacekeepers in Baguio will soon have a better learning on the use of their batons once the city's proposed project of teaching arnis reaches the 129 different barangays.

With the much-needed improvement in keeping peace and order in the Summer Capital, the local government initiated through the city sports office a series of seminars re-introducing arnis as a form of self-defense.

City sports coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales told Sun.Star the proposed plan of piloting a community wide project that will include sports as a center of development.

“With this proposed project, target natin to encourage our fellow Baguio City residents to get themselves involved in sports and at the same time educate them with the other use of such skills,” Gonzales said.

According to Gonzales, the proposed plan will aid proper education regarding self-defense not only to barangay officers and officials but also interested residents.

“If this will be approved, we will open it to all interested residents in every barangay, but our main concern are the barangay tanods since more likely sila naman ang may kailangan nyan observing na arnis na rin ang mga kadalasang gamit nila,” Gonzales quipped.

According to Republict Act No. 9850 approved on December 11 2009, arnis was declared as the “Philippine National Martial Art and Sport”.

The act then orders the Department of Education, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Philippine Sports Commission together with the different LGU’s to promulgate the rules and regulations necessary to carry out its provisions.

Gonzales said the project will be in line with other programs such as other youth sport activities in each community and livelihood programs.

According to the proposal, the funding for the project will come from the unutilized allocations of the Sangguniang Kabataan of the city.

In 2013, the Commission on Election, through R.A. 10632, postponed the SK elections and said to either carry on the next barangay local elections on 2015.

According to Gonzales, the local arnis clubs in the city will conduct the sport and self-defense seminars.
