Benguet fighter battles for WBC Youth crown

ANOTHER Benguet trained boxer will be setting his sight for a possible crown this Saturday, May 7, in Kuming, China.

Twenty-two year old Nelson Gulpe, ranked as the number four 147 lbs boxer in the country, will gun for the vacant WBC Youth World welterweight title as he squares off against top Chinese contender, Yang Xing Xin.

Gulpe, who trains at the Highland Boxing Gym in La Trinidad, Benguet managed by Brico Santig owns a record of eight bouts that include three knock outs and one loss coming from Accel Sumiyoshi way back in 2013 via split decision in their eight rounder match-up.

Prior to his loss, Gulpe had successfully won all of his first eight boutS including a second round knockout of Elmer Legaria in April of 2012 for the vacant WBC Asia Council Continental lightweight title in Santa Cruz, Zambales.

Yan Xing Yin has a respectable 7-3-2 (win-loss-draw) record and the advantage of fighting on home grounds.

Gulpe also scored a unanimous win over higher ranked Thai Eakkhunphol Mor Krungthepthonburi in their vacant WBO Asia Pacific Youth lightweight title via a unanimous decision win in March last year In Agusan Del Norte.

Santig is hoping his boxer will pull off a surprise in their scheduled 12 round match-up against a higly favored fighter.

Santig, The WBC Asian Boxing Council Promoter of the Year Awardee also manages IBO Jr. Flyweight World champion Rey Loreto who captured the title early this year.

Aside from Loreto, Santig also manages several boxers which include former WBO Orienatal bantamwieght champion Dayer Gabutan, former WBC Asia Council Continental featherweight champion Alvin Tam, IBF contender Matteo Handig, WBC Asia Council Continental light flyweight titlist Jay-ar Estremos, WBC Asia Council Continental minimumweight champion Donny Mabao, and WBC International flyweight champion Rey Migreno.
