MT. KINABALO bound Sandi Menchi is expected to bring her training to a higher level in the next three months before setting foot in Malaysia.
With a possible podium finish in sight in the upcoming 28th Mt. Kinabalu International Climbathon in Sabah, Abahan is ready to face all the challenges in her first international running competition slated October 18 -19.
“Takbo pa rin, yun lang ang goal ko everytime I train. So far maganda naman ang mga results ng mga events na sinasalihan ko lately, it helps me become a better runner everyday,” Abahan said.
The former University of the Cordilleras Jaguar, who recently finished her bachelor’s degree in education said she remains focused on her sight to be among the top finishers when the international event concludes.
“Hopefully lahat ng preparations that I have will pay-off when I get there. It is my first time to represent Philippines in sky running and I guess it will give me challenge just like the 3rd Pilipinas Akyathlon,” Abahan said.
The city based female athlete said the region’s mountain trails will be the best training ground for her in the next months.
“Kung sa preparations lang for Mt. Kinabalu it will be all here sa atin and for the next few months high altitude training talaga ang kailangan ko,” Abahan quipped.
The 23 year-old long distance runner recently bagged second place in the 38th Milo National Marathon Baguio Leg qualifying for the national finals on December.
Apart from the 3rd Pilipinas Akyathlon crown she holds, she is also the reigning women's 2014 North Face 100 women's 50-kilometer champion.
Abahan is the current record holder in both foot race events and considered a rising star among local runners.
She will be accompanied by Bicol-based runner Jemarvin Cabilan, the first Filipino male to finish the Akyathlon 2014. The two will be the Philippines' representatives, who will try to bid for the top place finish in the 2,760-meter high Mt. Kinabalu and will be sponsored by Philippine Skyrunning Association with a round-trip ticket and race entry going to Malaysia.
