OLIVER Apostol finished with a double four to complete a 4-0 rout of top rated Santi Bugnosen to win the premiere bracket A of the Luisas Friendship tournament at the Luisas café recently.

It was a furious close for Apostol who needed only 13 pins to complete the 501 with a 100 as opener and followed with a pair of 140s then a 113 to set up the eight as closer. It was a win completed in barely 30 minutes of what was supposed to be the toughest fight for the nurse.

Not less than an hour earlier, Apostol completed his way to the finals as he closed with a double 18 after hitting two triple 19s for a 150 outing to complete a 3-1 beating of second rated Alex Maday-a.

It was a long wait for the nurse from Itogon, Benguet who waited the whole afternoon and early evening of Saturday for the La Trinidad-based Maday-a.

The long wait almost turned into a nightmare when Maday-a took the opener with a closing double 10 and after failing to get a double top (20).

“I would not want to win via default so I waited for the two,” said Apostol who could have outrightly took the last two matches after routing the fourth ranked Mon Bendoy (3 to nil) and earlier fifth ranked John Laking, 3-1.

Apostol found his rhythm and fought his way back to get the next three games of the race to three semifinals.

Earlier, Rudz Paraan ended a two game winning streak of the third ranked Carl Taawan to take the bracket C crown.

Taawan has earlier swamped sixth seed Pigeon Lobien who had a similar two win streak, a come from behind 3-2 beating of fifth rated Lanie Dampag and later a 3-0 sweep of Jaja Lamaria.

Second seed Rocky Martin also shook off a similar long wait when he snapped from an opening loss to top rated Nap Maranan and win 4-1 with a double 19 closer to take the bracket B title.

It was a tough match earlier that afternoon when he came from behind to beat Art Cabacungan, 3-2, to get the second finals seat.

Cabacungan, a JRS employee, had to postpone the Saturday setto with Martin and came only after his 6 PM duty at the Session Road branch of the parcel delivery. Cabacungan had a long climb as the sixth rated three time class O champion decided fifth seed Haidee Dagupon. Then a 3-0 beating of fourth rated Jose Ang setting up a third match against third seed Alysa Gumanab whom he beat 3-0 including a top final stage of 160 closer, two triple 20s and a double top closer.

And it appeared that he could complete the Cinderella run when he led Martin 2-1 but lost the next two matches by the closest margin. (PR)
