ERWIN Calixterio finished with 30 big points to rally Camp 8 in a 75-72, victory against a tenacious Pinsao Pilot squad in the on-going eliminations of the Samahang Barangay Pangkalikasan Invitational Basketball Tournament season 5.
Leading almost the entire match, Camp 8 almost buckled down in the pay off period but still found its way to escape Pinsao at the South Sanitary Camp covered court Sunday morning.
“Tiyaga lang naman ang naging puhunan bakit kami nanalo sa laro today. Nauna kami sa scoring pero ang challenge dun eh yung i-maintain ang lamang at manalo,” said Calixterio, who dropped 21 points in the first half.
“Medyo humina lang yung depensa namin late sa fourth quarter kaya nakuha ng kalaban yung lead pero eventually kinaya naman namin gawan ng butas para sa opensa so eto may three-points na lamang kami sa huli,” Calixterio added.
Calixterio teamed-up with forward Rudy Vergara and Roniel Domingo in hacking out a combined 28 points in the first two periods to lead Pinsao, 36-30 going into the half time.
Nelson Turtoga stepped on the gas and pulled Pinsao within one, 44-45,with 4:11 remaining but CJ Sanklin doused the uprising and scored seven straight points to close the third period with a 58 -54 edge, Camp 8 still on top.
Pinsao then tied the ballgame 58 all in the 8:42 mark of the pay-off canto coming from a triple by Jessie Culoz before securing the first taste of the lead at 67-70 with 1:40 remaining on a 12 -9 run courtesy of Turtoga and Cesar Pal-og.
But Pinsao suddenly ran out of gas in the closing minutes as Calixterio exploded for a back to back fast break to seal the victory for Camp 8.
Sanklin finished with 19 points while Vergara added 10 for Camp 8.
Turtoga capped a double-double performance for Pinsao with 30 points, 13 rebounds, and four steals, together with Culoz who dropped 12 markers.
