Official moves to cut incentives to athletes-A A +A

THE Baguio City Sports Office is eyeing to cut down sports incentives to athletes.
City Sports Coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said their office is currently studying the possibility of not including athletes in the cash incentive programs who will play in regional competitions outside CARAA and national sanctioned competitions.
"We are reviewing the proposal but it was already raised and it will be upon the approval of the council kung papayagan pang isama yan sa annual budget," Gonzales said.
The CSO recently submitted its own proposal to be included in the amendment of City Ordinance 92, series of 1993, raising the prescribed cash incentives to athletes and coaches.
Gonzales said the proposal will be included together with the inclusion of team events in the resolution.
“Minsanan na iyon for review, included naman ang reasons doon so if not totally crossed, out we will generate additional guidelines and maybe adopt yung marginal amount given by the Department of Education,” Gonzales said.
Currently DepEd only gives P1,000 for gold; P750 for silver; and P500 for bronze medals won during the Palarong Pambansa.
According to the proposal, only those regional events leading to a higher competition such as national and international events will be included in the incentives.
“Nakalagay diyan na sa regional Batang Pinoy, and CARAA nalang ang bibigyan ng city kasi yang mga yan talaga ang aiming for higher level of contest unlike sa iba,” Gonzales said.
“It’s already obvious kasi na minsan yung mga local coaches natin sila-sila rin ang nag-o-organize ng regional event tapos yung mga local athletes rin natin including sila (coaches) ang nananalo and after which they come to claim their incentives na kung papansinin mo, pinagkakaperahan nalang nila,” Gonzales added.
He said the proposal will also be one factor in approving the resolution regarding raising sport incentives and the inclusion of team events.
“It is just a matter of making things balance, we want to raise cash grants so dapat we should also raise yung level ng competence. Dapat yung performance of our local athletes and coaches always aim for a higher level of contest, para maging equally fair,” Gonzales said.
