ARNIS will no longer be a part of the sport competitions lined-up for the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League.

With the 28th season all set to tip-off on August 30, the executive and technical committee of BBEAL agreed during a recent meeting the exclusion of arnis as part of the largest collegiate sport association in the region.

28th BBEAL Commissioner of host Baguio College of Technology sports director Willy Antonio told Sun.Star Baguio arnis will not be included for the season.

"Unfortunately, the technical and executive committees agreed to take arnis out of the bucket list. This is tragic for some of the athletes but it is a majority decision," Antonio said.

Antonio added that for the previous years of BBEAL, only few of the member schools send athletes to compete.

"I don't know, last season there were only three schools that had entries and now there is only one who confirmed to send their athletes so basically we cut the game out of BBEAL," Antonio said.

Antonio said the University of the Cordilleras was the lone school who expressed to send players for the competition.

"Maybe we can bring it back in the next few seasons but for now it's out, it will depend sa mga ibat-ibang schools whether they will train athletes para dumami ulit ang entries," Antonio said.

Earlier, BBEAL announced basketball will be played in the first phase while volleyball will be the banner sport for the second phase patterned to NCAA and UAAP.

Apart from the ballgames, first phase events programmed until December will see competitions including chess, badminton, table tennis, sepak, swimming and archery.

The second phase events seen to start on January will have athletics, wushu, taekwondo, softball, baseball, football and judo.

Aside from BCT and UC, members of the league are Baguio Central University, Philippine Military Academy, Pines City College Inc., Saint Louis University, University of Baguio, and the University of the Philippines-Baguio.

La Trinidad based Benguet State University and Cordillera Career Development College are also members of the collegiate league.
