DESPITE the lack of proper training equipment, the Hungduan, Ifugao Wrestling Team aims to improve their skills in a bid to help the region improve its standing in the 2015 Palarong Pambansa.

Ifugao, which has leaped to new heights in the 2014 Cordillera Administrative Region wrestling contests, will shoot for more spots as the Philippine Olympic Committee-Philippine Sports Commission has included the event as a regular sports competition.

Hungduan wrestling team coach and manager Marilyn Buyucan told Sun. Star Baguio the Ifugao based squad wishes to get help in cultivating the sport.

“As a coach all I can do is to share my knowledge to the children, all other needed materials are being funded through our own pockets,” Buyucan said.

According to Buyucan, the wrestling team has been funded with just six wrestling mats as a training material.

The Ifugao grapplers dominated the 2014 CARAA by tackling five gold medals courtesy of the late Palaro bronze medallist John Mar Pat-angay, with Arsellyn Battatong, Lovelyn Bandao, Bless Napiloy, and Classira May Hagitan.

colleagues Terrence Tubice and Divine Cumaling earned silver medals each, together with Emmerson Binahan scoring a bronze medal.

“Even though we lack materials needed to train our kids, we are very proud that we are able to produce few of the best athletes in the region who competes in national held events,” Buyucan said.

According to Buyucan, the team will seek improvement in their training programs with the sport being eyed as a new gold mine for Cordillera in the annual Palaro counting among other combative sports like taekwondo and arnis.

Apart from Palarong Pambansa, POC-PSC also announced the insertion of wrestling in other national competitions including Batang Pinoy, Philippine National Games, Women Martial Arts Festival and other nationally sanctioned tournaments.
