LONGDISTANCE runner Sandy Menchi Abahan rushed towards another stellar performance after bagging the crown in the women’s age group contest and finishing fourth place overall in the recently concluded Mt. Mayon Triathlon 2014 in Legaspi, Albay recently.
The reigning 3rd Pilipinas Akyathlon women’s champion bested competitors from around the country after crossing the finish line in 2 hours and 39 minutes in the 20-24 years old age category.
“I am proud to earn a title sa ganitong event, triathlon is quite a test not only physically but mentally and I’m very happy to add another peak moment like this to my sports career,” Abahan told Sun.Star Baguio.
According to Abahan she started participating in triathlon events since last year.
“Talagang ginanahan rin ako, for me this was the best and most enjoyed triathlon so far,” Abahan said.
“Before I was just a pure running competitor, then I went into duathlon, and now very fulfilled since as a triathlete I am making my fellow Baguio athletes proud,” Abahan added.
The 24-year-old former University of the Cordilleras Jaguars was the sole female Baguio based participant for the event together with fellow triathletes Lester Abella (20-24 years-old) and Doddie Jr Cruz Dino (50-54 year-old), who both placed second in their age group contests.
The tri-race competition is a scenic tour of the city and Mayon volcano starting with a 1.5-kilometer swim, a 40-kilometer bike ride, and finished with a 10-kilometer run.
The BS Education fresh grad is currently preparing for the 28th Mt. Kinabalu International Climbathon in Sabah, Malaysia this October.
Abahan also topped the 2014 North Face 100 women’s 50-kilometer title after setting a new time record of 7:00:06 earlier in May and to be considered the fastest female runner in her class. (Mark Victor Pasagoy)
