BAGUIO City's Sandy Menchi Abahan is aiming to become the youngest Filipina runner to be crowned champion in the 28th Mt. Kinabalu International Climbathon in Sabah slated later in October.

"I was hoping to improve better with all my physical training done, if I can maintain the progress right now I guess we can stand a chance to be among the people who will stand in the podium after the race," Abahan told Sun.Star Baguio.

The reigning 3rd Pilipinas Akyathlon women's champion will be representing the country in Malaysia after dominating the Philippine qualifying leg earlier in January this year.

Abahan will be joining Jemarvin Cabilan from Bicol, the first male Filipino to finish Akyathlon 2014, in time for the international running event.

"I am currently trying to develop the needed skills para even before the international sports outing I can already assess whether I am fit for the uphill and downhill running challenge," Abahan said.

"Ngayon continuous lang muna ang takbo, but I am also doing other training stuff which could be helpful sa pag-condition ng katawan," Abahan added.

Abahan just topped her age group contest, and finished fourth overall in the Mt. Mayon Triathlon 2014 in Legaspi, Albay recently.

The 24-year-old also reigned in the women's 2014 North Face 100 50-kilometer run where she set a new record of 7:00:06 and considered to be the fastest female runner in her class.

Abahan, together with Cabilan, will be sponsored by Philippine Skyrunning Association with a round-trip ticket and race entry going to Malaysia to represent the country in the international running event.

"I am still waiting for the our sponsors to give new updates for the race pero sabi naman nila the last time they will keep us posted for anything in need," Abahan said.

Abahan will try to scale the 2,760-meter high Mt. Kinabalu as she tries to set new records after lording the Akyathlon held in Tinongdan, Itogon in 4:59:50.
