THE all-Baguio boys club, Apaches, will hold a run both competitive and fun to celebrate 75 years of food, fun, fellowship, faith and family.

“We want the presence of the Baguio Apaches felt in the city,” said councilor Richard Cariño, chief (leader) of the group.

Cariño said that there will be a 10-kilometer open run for the August 31 run that starts at Burnham Lake Drive and culminates at the Botanical Garden where the Apaches has adopted part of the park as venue of its annual celebration on December 30 with a grand bonfire.

Originally the run was slated on August 30, but that is also the opening of the Baguio Benguet Educational Athletic League which will need help from University of Baguio athletic director Ed Laureano, who is also race director of the Apaches Run.

Cash prize and trophy await the winner of the 10K run marking the diamond jubilee of the organization founded in 1939 by members of Baguio pioneers who went on to become war heroes, shakers and builders of the city among them the late mayor Ernesto Bueno.

The 10 K route starts at the Lake Drive, through Kisad, BGH circle, Kennon Road, up Loakan Road, Session Road Circle through South Drive, Country Club Road, Mines View, Gibraltar, Pacdal Circle and winds up at the Botanical Garden where the winners are also expected to plant pine tree saplings to promote environmental concerns.

Part of the park has been made into an Apache pine tree stand plantation area.

The event will also have a 5K and 3K fun runs that starts at the same area, BGH Rotonda, then left to Military Cut-off and the same route until the Botanical Garden. The Mines View – Gibraltar road is not part, however, of the 3K run.

The run preludes the Apache gala night slated middle of September.

Founded in 1939, the club has some of the most respected locals as members among them mayors, congressmen, councilors, judges, lawyers, educators and military and police generals, businessmen as well as journalists. (PR)
