IDEAL FOR hikers and trail runners, the Cordillera region has been home to several ultra running and eco- trail adventure.

And with its magnificent sight and lung busting climbs, a group of ultra runners and hikers are planning to set-up an expedition that will showcase the six provinces and two cities that comprise the Cordillera Administrative Region.

Dubbed the Cordillera Great Traverse 2015, the trip is designed to be the longest expedition in the Philippines starting from Sagada, Mountain Province, connecting and passing through Abra, Kalinga, Apayao, Ifugao, and culminating in Baguio City, Benguet.

Although not a race, the monumental tour spans approximately more than 400 kilometers with several thousand meters of elevation gain and loss through mountain passes, forests, rivers, waterfalls, rice terraces, villages and ancient trails.

“The Cordillera Great Traverse which will fire off next year aims to pass thru scenic tourist spots in the region,” said lawyer Jonnifer Lancanlale, founder and overall head and president of Philippine Trail Conservation and Events, Inc. (PhilTrace) which is the front runner of the CGT.

Lacanlale added the traverse also aims to establish the longest and most scenic sustainable trekking/hiking destination in the Philippines, with the ambition of landing a distinguished place among the best trekking destinations in the world.

“If you talk about the Philippines, wala pa tayong sustainable trekking and hiking destination which can be compared to other countries,” added Lacanlale.

Among the famous trekking and hiking destination around the world include the Appalachian Trail (3,500km, USA), the Great North Walk (250km, Australia), Drakensberg (220km, South Africa) and GR20 (180km Europe).

The planned trek is tentatively set April next year which will feature a hike connecting the six provinces and ends in either Benguet or Baguio City.

Lacanlale meanwhile said for its launching year, the group will try to establish the fastest record time during its first expedition next year.

In 2016, the challenge will be open to local and international participants. Subsequent challenges will be per year called CGT 2016, CGT 2017, based on the same month (April) and other standards to be set by CGT 2015 Team during their successful Expedition.
