THE 129 barangays in the Summer Capital formally kicked off the Barangay Day Celebration with sports events at the Sanitary Camp covered court during the weekend.
Hatched by the Association of Barangay Councils of Baguio City, the 129 barangays were divided into ten clustered districts to compete in various sport competitions.
ABC president and Councilor Michael Lee Lawana told Sun.Star Baguio the annual celebration is scheduled to foster sport competitions embraced as the centrepiece of the event.
"This program is celebrated annually and we always keep this various sport activities lined up for our small communities and their constituents to take part of," Lawana said.
The chairman for the Committee on Youth Welfare and Sports Development said that apart from gathering barangay leaders, the annual activity also serves as a venue for the locals to participate and showcase their skills.
“We should give importance to activities such as these, especially to the events that really catches the attention and participation of our locals. In this scenario sports is what supports our cause,” Lawana quipped.
The program was graced by city mayor Mauricio Domogan who challenged barangay leaders and participants of the events to pursue camaraderie and instil sportsmanship among themselves.
Six sport competitions are lined up for this year including basketball, volleyball, billiards, darts, bowling, and chess.
According to Lawana the ballgame competitions will be scheduled during the weekends in various barangays, while the timetable for the individual sports contests are yet to be announced.
