COLLEGIATE sports fans gather anew as the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League officially kicked off at the Cordillera Career Development College over the weekend.
Propelled with the theme, "Start Up 2014: Advancing Solidarity and Excellence in Sport", the largest collegiate sports association in the region unfolded its 28th season with Baguio College of Technology as host.
BCT president Wilfredo Abad Jr. said during the opening rites their three-year-old presence in the collegiate sports association will be carried out with full pride despite being the youngest member of the BBEAL.
“We are very proud to be the host school of the 28th season of BBEAL. Despite being the newest member for the league we are thankful for the confidence and support the pioneers of this association has given to us,” Abad said.
The ten-school conclave of BBEAL opened this year’s first phase with various sports competitions which include basketball as the centrepiece, chess, badminton, table tennis, sepak takraw, swimming and archery.
Nine teams are expected to display their basketball skills in the men’s side with the University of Baguio Cardinals seeking another back-to-back title and a possible 23rd crown in the almost three-decade league.
Meanwhile in the distaff, the defending Saint Louis University Lady Navigators will joust against two other female squads namely University of the Cordilleras Lady Jaguars and UB Lady Cardinals as the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons fail to join to defend their third honor rank last year.
UB will try to continue its earlier reign in the defunct Baguio-Benguet Collegiate Athletic Association bagging the overall lead after cornering 14 titles in the 29 various contest in season 27 including chess, table tennis, taekwondo, Judo (men), wushu, archery (women), swimming (women), and athletics.
The UC men’s basketball will try to reclaim their lost title from last year as SLU and BCT hunt for their first crown, while two-time titlist CCDC Admirals turn as spoiler shooting for their third.
Meanwhile, second phase events seen to hit the net on January will have volleyball, athletics, wushu, taekwondo, softball, baseball, football and judo.
BCT athletic director and BBEAL 28 Commissioner Willy Antonio said he is confident collegiate sports fans will give full support to the different line events for the season.
“Personally I believe this year will get all the support from the member schools especially the students they have. Despite not being so impressive than that of the opening last year, the events are still as stirring and will continue to carry with the former theme ‘reboot’,” Antonio closed.
Other teams seeing action for this year’s men’s basketball competition include the Philippine Military Academy Cavaliers, Baguio Central University Eagles, Benguet State University Wildcats and Pines City Colleges Warriors.
