TCS beach volleyball finally sees action

SAINT Louis University (SLU), together with 16 other teams, opened their title bid on Sunday as the 1st TrueColors BBEAL Panagbenga Women's Beach Volleyball finally kicked off after its postponement two weeks ago.

The SLU Lady Navigators will be a marked squad in the two-day competition at the slow sands of the newly constructed beach volleyball court at the Athletic Bowl.

Elite runners top Brent Run 3

ELITE Filipino runner Erick Paniqui and former national team Crystabel Marquez raced against time to top their respective category in the 22 kilometer (22K) for the third offering of the Brent Run for a Cause during the weekend.

The running Ilonggo crossed the finish line with one hour, 19 minutes and 54 seconds (1:29:54) besting University of the Cordilleras' Cesar Castaneto Jr. with a time of 1:24:57, five minutes slower than Paniqui while Samuel Tarus finished third in the half road, half trail run with a time of 1:26:58.

In-house players win Sadati weekly darts tournament

THE weekly darts tournament at the Sadati Bar and Resto darts tournament was won by their in house player Kenneth Madallang and partner Archie Guerero last Saturday, March 16.

It wasn’t an easy win when they lost the best of 3 in the 501 game to defend the winners’ side. But they bounced back in closing the game with double 16 while the enemy was still scrambling with 200 score left in the final 701 game. Nelson Uligan and partner Abel Lopez settled for the second place.

MIKE Arnaiz shot 46 molave points to pull off an impressive victory in the 2013 edition of SLU Boys High Club 7882 Golf for a cause at the Baguio Country Club during the weekend.

Arnaiz made up for his sorry game at the front nine before scoring five pars in the last five holes to win the overall crown of the two day tournament supported by Nickel Asia Corporation-Cordillera Exploration Company Inc., Philex Mining Corporation, Exponent Controls & Electrical Corporation and Benguet Corporation.

Nomads cleans out Dalupirip fun ride

NOMADS bike group towed the field with seven of their riders placing in top ten of the first Mountain Bike Fun Ride for a cause in barangay Dalupirip, Itogon, Benguet.

Covering at least 30 kilometers of paved and gravel roads, Bogs Mollona of Nomads finished the course with a time of one hour and 27 minutes and win home the top purse of P1,500.

Bautista conquers Ilocos challenge anew

DESPITE running third in an earlier ultra-marathon race, Marcelo Bautista beat all odds to conquer the tough 2nd Ilocos Challenge, which started at the Laoag-Culili Point en route to Paoay, then back to Laoag City.

Bautista recorded a time of four hours and 23 minutes, 19 minutes slower than his time last year, when he also topped the 50-kilometer (50K) race passing through almost 12K of sand dunes.

Baguio City up for Le Tour de Pilipinas

CYCLING takes center stage in the Summer Capital anew with the fourth Le Tour de Pilipinas pedals off on April 13 featuring crack riders from 20 foreign and local teams vying for top honors in the fabled tour included in the international cycling calendar.   

Firing of from April 13 to 16, Stage 1 will start in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte and will end in Aparri, Cagayan covering 180 kilometers while the 200-kilometer stretch of stage 2 will start in Aparri and will end at Cauyan City in Isabela.

Cardinals rule BBEAL athletics anew

UNIVERSITY of Baguio (UB) leaned on the five gold medal output each coming from long runners Joan Caido and Melva Cawid in winning the overall crown at the close of the athletics competition in the 26th Baguio–Benguet Educational Athletic League (BBEAL).

Caido’s five gold medal accounted for the nine gold medal haul in the men’s competition while Cawid had five of the 12 gold medals for the distaff side as the Cardinals continue to reign supreme in the track and field event.

Bautista is 2013 ultramarathon runner of the year

Red Cross Run in Kalinga nets P85,560

TABUK CITY, Kalinga – The Red Cross Kalinga Chapter has collected a net proceed of P85,560 during the recent Million Volunteer Run 2 with the theme “Run to Save Lives” in the province.

Kalinga Red Cross Administrator Glorina Diaz said that as of press time, gross collections has reached P133,200 where P55,990 was utilized for incidental expenses.

IT IS always said that arnis is a weapon based combative art. And with that said it is often mistakenly assumed that the popular stick is its weapon. Well that may be true on a shallow perspective of the martial art of arnis. It may sound confusing but as I always say in my lectures on arnis, “With or without anything held by the hand, it is still arnis.” This always raises eyebrows from my students and will soon drool for my elaboration.

Pinsao tops Goshenland G-string football

ABOUT 50 teams with more than 600 football players gathered during the weekend in the second staging of the Goshenland G-String Football Cup at the Melvin Jones grounds.

Runner gets PMA’s athletic saber award

A SEASONED long distance runner bested some 124 cadets and cadettes of the graduating Puso’t Dangal ng mga Kawal ng Lahing Nagkakaisa or Pudang Kalis Class 2013 to receive the athletic saber award of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

Cadet first class Mark Rolly Bacani, 22, a member of the PMA athletic squad, will receive the special award during a simple ceremony March 14 prior to their graduation.

Wa-o captures Luzon pro boxing crown

BENGUET’S undefeated boxer Rex Wa-o came charging and kept his winning run to capture the vacant Luzon Professional Boxing Association (Luzproba) super bantamweight title during the weekend in the event dubbed King of the Ring III.

Top seeded duo wins darts tilt

INTERNATIONAL player Arvy Briones, with partner Norman Seo-as, won the classified doubles darts tournament at the Sadati Bar and Restaurant Saturday pocketing the top purse of 10,000 in the weekly competition.

The duo stayed on top to the end never giving up the winner’s side. The final contenders Darryl Tinipac and Jerry Signaben were able to work their way up from the loser’s side with both tandems scoring good productions. But their efforts were no match to the top seeded Briones.

Apayao ready for bigger sports events

APAYAO expressed its readiness to host other sporting events in the region in its Apayao Sports Complex following the successful hosting of the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (Caraa).

“We never thought na maganda yung magiging reception ng mga athletes coming from other provinces but they were very appreciative of what we’ve done,” said Apayao Governor Elias Bulut Jr.
