On tap are individual and team kata (form) and kumite (sparring) for both male and female practitioners divided into age and belt categories, according to Herman Pelingen, assistant to Kunio Sasaki, the JKA’s official representative to the Philippines.
Sasaki declared last year the branch at the basement of the Epiphany Church here as the central headquarters of JKA-Philippines, which he established as a young second dan in the middle ‘60s.
Although protective mitts will be required, the sparring events will follow the full-contact rule of traditional karate and use the ippon (full-point) scoring system.
The specific kata for each category will be heian shodan, heian nidan and heian sandan for white to green belts; the five heian kata (shodan to godan), tekki shodan and basai dai for blue to purple belts; and shite kata (basai dai, join and kanku dai), sentei kata (empi, kanusho, nijushiho, gujoshoho dai) for the brown-to-black belt bracket.
Pelingen will serve as chief judge, to be assisted by Teofano Daniel Pinas, Kevin Cabading, Quintin, Domingo Pulig, Dave Satur, Anton Tiwaken, Ramon Balabceo, Murphy Quintin, and Fernando Cancejo. Paul Belinan will be the arbitrator. (Ramon Dacawi)
