Wushu coach disappointed over world wushu weigh in

WUSHU coach Tony Candelaria last week expressed disappointment over the disqualification of his several wards in the Philippine contingent to the Toronto, Canada World Wushu Championship last week of October.

"It's really disappointing. It would have been a good preparation for the team, which has no venue for training with the current rift in leadership in the Wushu Federation of the Philippines," said Candelaria.

Candelaria said it was the delay in the release of money, which stalled the flight of the team composed of two-time South East Asian gold medalist Eduard Folayang, Olympics bronze medalist Marianne Mariano, Mary Jane Estimar, Mark Eddiva, Jessie Alidadag and Stephanie Alday.

Delayed already with their flight tickets, the team was further stalled when the connecting flight from Vancouver, where they landed, to Toronto was delayed.

"They were stuck there," he added.

The team was delayed for six hours and missed the weigh in even if the organizers agreed there will be a special weigh in for the Philippine contingent, said WFP secretary-general Julian Camacho.

But Camacho said they were surprised when the organizers did not grant the special weigh-in.

"They [organizers] even e-mailed us they will allow a special weigh-in for us. The team was six hours late but there was no weigh-in," said Camacho in a press release.

He added Germany also arrived late but was granted a special weigh-in.

"They perhaps are afraid of the Filipinos because we are traditional winners there," said Camacho.

The fiasco was the first time the country missed the world championship, which boasts some of the better players especially in the lower weight categories.

"It could have been a good training ground for our players as preparation for [their] South East Asian games [stint]," he said.

Mariano, Eddiva, Estimar are among those seeing action in the SeaGames to be held in Laos next month.
