MANILA — Catholic Church leaders welcomed Friday President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s move to sign into law a measure that extends the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (Carp) by another five years.
“We are thankful that President Arroyo finally signed the Carp Extension with Reform (Carper) because this has been the farmers’ longtime dream. This is really for them,” said Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) Public Affairs Committee chairman Bishop Deogracias Iniguez over Radio Veritas 846.
He said the signing of the law is a “victory for landless farmers.”
But for Basilan Bishop Martin Jumoad, the law would be effective if it will be implemented equally.
“It’s a welcome development and a landmark law. Hope the implementers will really work hard to implement the law for all. There are no sacred cows to be spared, because the lands belong to many powerful politicians,” he noted.
The Mindanao prelate said they will closely monitor the implementation of the law to make sure that no sacred cows are indeed spared. (more)
