Palace denies hand on convict’s transfer

MALACAÑANG on Saturday said it has nothing to do with the impending transfer to Spain of a convict in a 12-year-old rape-slay case in Cebu, even as the mother of the victims vowed to question the move.

Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said the Palace will leave it to the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the courts to explain the transfer of Paco Larrañaga, a convict in the Chiong sisters’ rape-slay.

“We cannot interfere in cases like these. The justice department and the courts are handling it,” Remonde said on government-run dzRB radio.

He said Malacañang can only call on all concerned in the case to “observe proper justice and follow the justice system.”

But Thelma Chiong, whose daughters were killed in the 1997 incident, said she was shocked over the DOJ’s sudden approval of the transfer of Larrañaga. (more)
