Arroyo junks communist rebels’ request

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo rejected the demand of the communist rebels to release more of their consultants, including the dropping of charges against them before the peace negotiations could resume.

Arroyo, in an interview by Radio Mindanao-North Cotabato, said the rule of law should always be followed.

“This cannot be done unless the court ruled. We have to follow the rule of law. Isn’t it (the rule of law) the issue on MOA-AD (memorandum of agreement on ancestral domain)?” she said.

The President was referring to a Supreme Court (SC) ruling that declared a proposed agreement between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) as unconstitutional.

This resulted in the attack of some rouge Muslims secessionist in communities and eventually ended in an impasse in the peace negotiations between the administration and the MILF. (more)
