‘SONA mirrors Arroyo’s denial of grave crisis’

A socio-political analyst has described President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s 8th State of the Nation Address (SONA) as a “denial” of the gravity of the current national crisis.

“It’s [SONA] a mirror of the denial of GMA of the gravity and seriousness of the national crisis,” Prof. Randolph David of the UP Sociology Department told ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) Monday after listening to the SONA.

David said Arroyo’s examples of a few Filipinos who were earning more under her administration showed that she does not understand the severity of poverty. “She praised the higher income of the jeepney driver, the welder, the butanding watcher. Is that the whole country?.”

He said a SONA should tell the people “where we are, why we’re here and what are the solutions” to the country’s problems.” But in Arroyo’s SONA, he noted that she blamed external factors such as high oil prices for the crisis.

David said Arroyo’s SONA thus does not clearly define what Congress’ legislative agenda should be since she did not give a clear analysis of the real causes of the national crisis.

He said the people know whether Arroyo is telling the true state of the nation, pointing out the the recent surveys of Social Weather Stations and Pulse Asia.

Pulse Asia last week said an early July 2008 survey only 13% of the people thought Arroyo’s previous SONA’s were truthful, while SWS said a survey in June showed the public’s net satisfaction rating of the Arroyo government’s overall performance hit a record low of minus 21.

True, true..no one trusts Gloria and her mole anymore. All that stuff she said is b. o. g. u. s. Plainly. But some of it though is true. at least. but oftentimes she sugarcoats the truth.

  12. chandra marie pepino on July 29th, 2008 at 8:50 pm

NO! I take it all back! after reading Rodel Tiempo’s comment I TAKE IT ALL BACK! EVERYTHING I SAID! If only we can learn to believe what she says. politics is like showbiz really. people particularly the media make up shit about you. then everyone reads about it and believe it. we’ve never even been in arroyo’s shoes. though this is a free country we still have to find out what it feels like before criticizing gloria. please lang. if we dont work together then the philippines will be sure to see its downfall. so we should stop complaining and start taking action. to the 99.9% of the philippine population who don’t believe gloria, then fine, i respect you guys. but instead why dont we work hand in hand to make this country a better place?

This is a fact. Kausap ko yung ate ko about the treatment of Filipinos to foreigners, and the treatment of foreigners to OFWs or even simply to the visiting Filipinos. “Magalang ang mga Pilipino, pero hindi naman sila ginagalang. Bakit kaya ganun?” Tapos sabay sabi ng ate ko, “Si Gloria kasi talaga eh.” And I was like, what the hell? Where’s the logic? Could you prove it? Could you show the direct, or even indirect connections? Im not pro-GMA. but come on Filipinos! This country is ours. EVALUATE YOURSELVES. DO YOU PAY YOUR TAXES? DO YOU HELP MAINTAIN OUR ENVIRONMENT? DO YOU OBEY RULES? OR ARE YOU JUST A MERE BYSTANDER? IF SO, YOU ARE NOT A QUALIFIED CRITIC.

“If we remove the VAT, business confidence will decline, interest rates will go up, the more the value of the peso will fall, and the more commodity prices will rise”Gloria Arroyo

The 10 key points of Gloria’s Arroyo 2008 SONA address :

2)The VAT shores up the nation’s fiscal independence.

    3) The VAT funds the infrastructure needs of the country.

4)Take away VAT and we shall put the rug under our present and future progress.

    5) Remove VAT,business confidence will decline.

6)Remove VAT,interest rates will go up.

7)Remove VAT,the value of the peso will fall.

8)Remove VAT,the more commodity prices will rise.

    9) The VAT allows the government to keep the price subsidy on rice.

10)If we remove the VAT on electricity and oil products,we will lose P80 billion for the poor.

First of all to tell you the truth I don’t really pay attention to the news I find it really depressing but I still have faith in our government and in our country I am a patriot I do feel hurt when we Filipinos put down our own country stating that such crisis is only happening here in our country hence the saying “only in the Philippines” but if you stop and look in terms of globally even the first world countries have political and economic problems, Philippines is not such a bad place to live and raise a family, I mean if we loose our faith in our country and in our government who else do you think would believe in it, the Americans, come on, it all starts internally, second we blame far too much on our president she’s only human she’s not a magician she cant make people to suddenly double their income in a matter of years, you cant assume her to make the Philippines a first world country in a term, this to is our country we too should take responsibility to it, you have to ask yourself are you following the law are you paying your taxes, do you help support Philippine made products, do you help maintain the environment, a person who has no self governance do not have a right to criticize their government.

My mum said whoever your President still the people not happy. i think the best solution is to change your system. You copy the style of U.S.A. Look and study the system there. The election is not the same of your style of election. America is a BIG country but the election just only one day and the knows already who the party win. The people not elect Obama or Cain but elect the one who represent the the party. So if he comment wrong the party terminate him EASY..understand now..YOUR People are corrupt that is why your Politicians are corrupt too.Presidential system elected by the people is corrupt system MAGTI-IS KAYO DIYAN…IT’S TIME TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM TO FEDERAL SYSTEM OR PARLIAMENTARY model AUSTRALIA

    hi!

  32. jade anthony avila on July 26th, 2009 at 8:59 am

    Matthew 5:37

Simply let your ”Yes” be ”Yes” and your ”No” be ”No”; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

If the ”word” is yes and the ”action” is no…. this is what the Bible says comes from the evil one..

  34. marriel on July 27th, 2009 at 9:26 am

  39. Thootz on July 27th, 2009 at 4:37 pm

Have we ever asked ourselves — What good have I done for the country? What is my individual contribution?

Most of us have been around since the Marcos regime and we really never had one good president that met all our expectations, let alone, alleviated this godforsaken country from poverty and decline.

Extremists, among others do nothing but find fault in the government. What good have they done? There are a lot of other politicians wasting the people’s tax money on time consuming blabber just to show that their co-politicians are nonetheless as worst and corrupt as them. There are a lot of bright politicians who get blinded by their own idealism, but have they really helped fix the country — politically, economically, socially, morally?

We are in a very young democracy and it’s still a long hard road to even match that of the U.S. What we need to eliminate is the “greed” in government, not just in the presidency. Nevertheless, we need to check on our own greedy ways — we take our chances in lottery, we take risks in working abroad, when we’re driving, we put one on other drivers on the road, we don’t give way to pedestrians, we always find ways to circumvent procedure, rules and regulations, we always want our convenience but we never really had the earnest desire to work for it.

It’s a pity a lot of us cast stones upon others without looking at our own faults.

It is not that all of Arroyo’s works are bad and corrupt! In fact, she has helped a lot of Filipinos on other ways. The thing is just that she cannot prove to us that she is good and helpful because we Filipinos does not help her in improving the country. She also needs a lot of help from her followers, and because that it is almost the end of her term, can’t we just give her the chance to do good deeds for our country? If we all help with her, I am sure that Philippines will be better than any of the countries.

If we believe in ourselves and to Our Excellency, President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo, we can really overcome the burdens and the circumstances that is faced by all Filipinos.

HE knows everything good for us.

    Seriously?
Why don’t people start working well for themselves and stop criticizing those who try hard?
Being a president of a country, where people think that the only way to set things right is through ‘the streets’, does not sound really easy. We cannot blame everything to Gloria Arroyo and the government because somewhere along the line, we are contributory to the problems our country.

Also, there is a clear difference with regard to a mob rule, democracy and freedom.
And by going to the streets, people are trying to do a mob rule not democracy.

    :)

I am an ex-pat living in the beautiful country of the Philippines for 12 years. I was also stationed here at Clark AB during the Marcos years from 1974-1976. I have seen the country grow, but also the corruption grow. Marcos and Erap would be very happy. You do this to yourselves. Why? Greed, corruption, illiterate? You never think of the things you could do to help your own country. Point out cheats, point of tax dodgers, file complaints. To many times I see people just hunch their shoulders and say, “What can we do about it?”, and you just let the situation stay the same. Then you try to blame your faults on your President., or your congressmen and women, or your senators. From a lot of ex-pats who live in your country, we can all see the good things GMA has done for your country. Then you have the complainers, whose only knowledge comes from the biased TV news stations and newspapers. Bending things to what they want you to here and see. To many forget that when the charges were brought against Erap, what did he do???? He ran away from the Presidency ! No one pushed him into the boat that carried him away !! That in itself looks GUILTY. Its a picture that speaks for itself ! Who will replace GMA in 2010?? I hope that the people of the Philippines will not be swayed just because the front runners hand out money for your votes. Thats how its done here…. Right? Whatever happens… wether you re-elect Erap again, or join the people just so you can get a little money in your hand, the results will be on you, the people. If its another corrupt person,,, the world will loose confidence in the Philippines, the Peso exchange rate will further be devalued, and your right back where you were 9 years ago. Do you want your president to pay your bills, buy your food, get you a jeepney or a tricycle? How can anyone make a statement that she hasnt done anything for you… personally. Thats rediculous! Its not about you, its about whats best for your country.

  48. jan on July 27th, 2009 at 9:59 pm

this country will have no future if people will depend everything on the president. the president is just the executive officer of this country. you won’t expect her to run around the country shoving spoons in your throats or planting sweet potatoes for you. gma has done the best she can to for this country.

i have lost hope for this government but i still believe in the people. stop blaming gloria kung wala kayong trabaho, nasa pagsisikap nalang yan ng tao,

“Some suffering is caused by the inheritance of mortality originating from Adam and Eve’s disobedience to God, which includes vulnerability to illness and disease. Also, Satan pervades the earth, causing pain and suffering. Many believe that suffering is God’s design to test, teach, or strengthen belief in Him; the greater the suffering of innocent believers, the greater will be their reward after life.” The reason why I choose to publish these thought, basically in this point of time we are in the book of revealation in which it is the last book of the bible. . .I want to tell it to the whole world that the coming of Jesus is very near and these prophecy will be fulfill until He came back on earth..All of these things happen on earth is part of God’s will…SO DILI NATA MATINGALA SA MGA PANGHITABU KARON. . . There needs to be electoral reforms in this country. Why do we see rampant tri-media advertisements especially those TV commercials showcasing those so-called presidentiables with their best foot forward, with lousy acting and all? It’s plainly making the people look stupid. These commercials need to stop. They always claim they are for the majority of the impoverished people. Sad as it may seem, this is a country of “star struck” voters. The more you’re exposed to the public, the better your chances. It’s an appeal to the ignorance of the people who they themselves failed to educate. Well, the irony is that most of these people whom they have educate are usually the first ones to bite back, ending up as extremists, taking everything to the streets… try to interview each one of these protesters and I doubt they would have a common inkling of what they’re truly and sincerely fighting for.

I just hope people do cast their votes rationally, because in the end, it might just end up as lip service for these politicians. Collectively, we are root cause of the problems in this country.

If we want to have a better country..start with our ourselves first. The government will not be able to help us. And that’s the reality. Believe in yourself. Dream Big. Aim high. Work Hard. Be Good! Have Faith. And this world will be a better place.

the sona, if you notice, is not centered on the issues of today. people are more focused on the president’s “PASARINGS” with her oponents and critic-makers. mas pinag uusapan at mas pinagtutuunan ng pansin, i think the president partly used the sona to attack her opponents and pay back on her critic-makers. come’on people.
come’on mrs. president are you not ashame of yourself or even to us..?

I think we should just learn to accept the truth, Pres. Arroyo won’t go down before the end of her term, so we should just learn to have a little faith and believe that things still have a possibility of changing.

Tayo mismo may magagawa. You’re not qualified to critic or even judge our President. Masyado kayong abuso. Kalapastanganan na ang ginagawa ng iba. If you were President Gloria, do you think you can be a strong as her? That despite of all negativities, she remains strong and really trying na mapaunlad at mabago ang dating kalagayan ng ating bansa. Kung talagang concern ang mga kritiko sa bansa or even a simple Filipino, let do something gud without your own interest. Right? Life is wat you make it!! Let say, sa trabaho: there’s a mismatch between sa qualified applicants at sa job. Kaya di nya kasalanan kung bakit yong iba wala tarabaho. Ikaw mismo ang gumagawa ng buhay mo. Anyway, let just thank her for being strong. Can’t you just imagine kung gaano kahirap igovern ang mga Filipino?
