Basilica to celebrate Kaplag

Kaplag (Discovery) commemorates the 443rd anniversary of the discovery of the miraculous Image of the Santo Niño on April 28, 1565 in a modest, native house by Juan Camus, a soldier of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi’s fleet of the then village of Cebu.

Deeply impressed by the finding of this Image that all agreed at the time was brought from Europe and aware of its significance, Legaspi ordered an official inquiry conducted. On May 16 of the same year, a document written at that time tells us from the testimony of eyewitnesses that the Image was found inside a small pine box. Preserved in almost perfect condition, the Image wore a little shirt and cap with two of the fingers of its right hand raised in a gesture of blessing, while the left hand held a globe symbolizing the world. Int’l airport in carabao island to help Boracay tourism

In one of the sidelines during the 2nd Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN)Tourism Congress (the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar & Cambodia) at the Cebu International Convention Center in Cebu City held June 14-15, 2007, Department of Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano, remarked that the Korean company, which was awarded with the rights to build an international airport in Carabao Island which is very near Boracay, will finally break-ground in the 4th week of June 2007. Mudpack Festival in Murcia

Mudpack Festival is a symbolic celebration of man’s return to primitive time when he was closer to nature.

Held every third weekend of June wherein people from all walks of life converge in Mambukal Mountain Resort in Barangay Minoyan, to commit themselves for the protection and conservation of the environment.

Mambukal and Mudpack have been top tourism attractions in the town of Murcia and the entire province of Negros Occidental.

Last year’s celebration focused on bio-diversity and awareness campaign on several species of bats found in the mountain resort.

DOT markets Davao’s 3 main festivals

THE Department of Tourism-Southern Mindanao will promote Davao Region’s top three festivals — Kadayawan in Davao City, Caracoles in the Island Garden City of Samal, and Musikahan in Tagum City — to Manila tour operators to boost tourism and the region’s economy.

DOT Regional Director Sonia Garcia in Monday’s Kapehan sa Dabaw at the SM City Davao said negotiations are being done with Manila tour operators to market these big events, but quick to add that local tour operators are not in the losing end as they are the one who will work on the ground and create tour packages. Compostela, Basak to join competition of country’s festivals

NOT one but two Sinulog contingents will compete in the Aliwan Festival competition this year, after organizers of the “Festival of all Festivals in the Philippines” were impressed with the grand parade performances.

Tribu Basakanon, the champion of last year’s Aliwan Festival, and the Compostela National High School contingent were chosen by the Sinulog organizers to compete at the Aliwan in April.(more)

Celebrated every 3rd Saturday of January. This spectacular & exciting event find its origin on a hillside in one of the inland barangays of the municipality when resting farmers witness for the first time the fight between the two raging bulls, set loose by their herdsmen. It caught the fancy of the barangay folks and soon it became a popular entertainment in most barangay fiestas. During the municipal fiesta, the best bulls from different barangays are pitted against each other by weight category in a “Bull Derby”.
