Kaplag (Discovery) commemorates the 443rd anniversary of the discovery of the miraculous Image of the Santo Niño on April 28, 1565 in a modest, native house by Juan Camus, a soldier of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi’s fleet of the then village of Cebu.

Deeply impressed by the finding of this Image that all agreed at the time was brought from Europe and aware of its significance, Legaspi ordered an official inquiry conducted. On May 16 of the same year, a document written at that time tells us from the testimony of eyewitnesses that the Image was found inside a small pine box. Preserved in almost perfect condition, the Image wore a little shirt and cap with two of the fingers of its right hand raised in a gesture of blessing, while the left hand held a globe symbolizing the world. STA. RITA — It was indeed a night to remember. Having imposed on ourselves an immediate fasting and having worked terrible long hours that day, we began telling ourselves that we were ready for the Arti.Sta Rita’s Duman Festival.

And like the ways that we usually start our December, we flocked that night to the old Sta. Rita Parish church patio and began the litany of a long gastronomic adventure of old Capampangan cooking. Greeting us were rows of stalls and booths, pastries and delicacies to home cooked meals that were lined at the four corners of the church meeting place. The Church patio was swarming with a huge mass of warm bodies. Some were seated on the middle of the field were chairs and tables were provided for eating. At the left side near the church was the makeshift stage was NCCA were performances from Arti Sta. Rita were staged non-stop. (more)

MASSKARA is coined from two words: mass, for crowd, and the Spanish word cara, for face — hence, a double meaning for “mask” and “many faces”. The Masskara festival was first conceived in 1980 to add color and cheer to the Bacolod City’s celebration of its Charter Day anniversary on October 19.

The symbol of the festival is a smiling mask — adopted by the organizers to dramatize the Negrenses’ happy spirit despite periodic economic crises experienced in the sugar industry. (more)
