Fiesta mng’t up in air
Danilo V. Adorador III
PROMOTE CDO Foundation’s status as manager of Cagayan de Oro’s annual major festival is on the line, as city officials are set to conduct post-evaluation on what critics described as the group’s dismal performance.
Despite “some glitches,” however, City Tourism Officer Emma Rae Gatuslao found the group’s performance “satisfactory.”
“For a group that did it for the first time, they exceeded my expectations,” Gatuslao told this paper, adding that she saw the “glitches” as “lessons to be learned” for the Promote CDO to ” make next year’s fiesta as colorful and as successful as ever.”
Despite the criticisms, Ruben Vegafria, Promote CDO Foundation official and over-all Festival chairman, remains unscathed, saying “we’ve done our best, but of course to some, our best was not good enough.”
Handling a purely private-funded festival for the first time was not an easy task, Vegafria said, boasting that prizes for this year’s contests were bigger and immediately dispensed to winners.
Vegafria, however, admitted there were “flops” in some of the fiesta’s core events, especially the Miss Kagay-an Tourism pageant.
He said he was leaving to the city officials the fate of their seven-year contract with the City Hall to manage the Festival.
Meanwhile, Councilor Ian Nacaya explained that the move had no “personal” undertones, but was only meant to ensure that the post-evaluation would remain objective.
Councilor Adrian Barba, described the commendation “premature,” citing the pending evaluation.
However, some councilors who requested not to be identified expressed dissatisfaction with Promote CDO’s performance in handling some of the core events, while one said the group’s “dismal supervisorial ability” had affected the quality of some of the core events.
A councilor was particularly displeased with the reported resignation of Miss Kagay-an Tourism’s pageant director, which he said had done damage to the coronation night’s outcome.
“Why was not that fixed at the outset? Look at the whole pageant, it was a disgrace to the public and to the visitors,” said the councilor, referring the last Saturday’s coronation night that was peppered with on-stage gaffes from among the candidates and even the hosts themselves.
A number of local journalists, meanwhile, complained that Promote CDO had failed to provide an effective information system, resulting to communication lapses that prevented other events to be given wider coverage.

AROUND 40,000 people reportedly flocked to the Bombo Radyo Kagay-an Festival Free Concert Free T-Shirt featuring Cebu-grown talent Cueshe held last Tuesday night at the
In interviews with Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro, dxIF Bombo Radyo station manager Quinlog “Bombo Jun” Albino, Jr. and operations manager Micheal Bustamante disclosed that they considered it a “miracle” that the weather last Tuesday night was `just right’ for their concert.
They said they observed that heavy rains have been pouring down just days successive to their scheduled activity.
Both radio veteran broadcasters admitted that they offered two dozens eggs to the local Carmelite Sisters to help them in praying for their petition that no rain will come that fateful Tuesday night.
“Mitalab gayud ang itlog ug dakong grasya kini sa atong Kahitas-an (Our offering worked and this is indeed a Grace from God in the Heavens),” Albino said.
Bustamante whose mother is one of the respected St. Augustine catechist teachers here echoed Albino’s words adding how a number of them and other crew members, sponsors and sources did not actually believe so much on making such an offering.
But when the free concert came and the there was no rain, he believed that `cynics and skeptics’ on the Power of Prayer and Sacrifice made some turnabout.
“Grabe wala man gyud mo-ulan. Naay gamay pagkahapon pero nawala raman (It was a miracle that there was no rain. There was a drizzle in the late afternoon but this stopped),” he said.
DXIF Bombo Radio anchorman Manny Agustero, Joel Jacobo, James Dacoycoy and Mark Martirez among others also voiced the same convictions.
These Bombo Radyo personnel expressed not just their gratitude to God and the Carmelite Sisters but also to the Cueshe Band composed of Jay Justiniani for vocals, Ruben Caballero for vocals and guitar, Fritz Labrado for bass, Jovan Mabini for lead guitar, Mike Manaloto for drums and Jhunjie Dosdos for the keyboards.

FLOAT number nine of the SM City was adjudged as the best float during yesterday’s First Golden Float Parade held in the main thoroughfares of Cagayan de Oro City, one of the highlights of the Cagayan de Oro fiesta and tourism month celebration.
Department of Tourism-Northern Mindanao Regional Director Catalino Chan, Jr. III said the concept of the float competition is beyond the unusual since the traditional parade in the previous years focuses only on civic military parade which has lesser impact.
Chan said it took their office a month conceptualizing the mechanics with 13 regular DOT-Northern Mindanao staff in making the festivities a crowd drawer, timely on the heroes day celebration.
Chan said, the success was attributed to the total participation of the business and private sector, religious, Local Government Unit of Cagayan de Oro and the academe sector.
“We see to it that during the tourism month celebration there will be no dull moment in August festivities,” Chan added.
There were 16 different agencies who participated in more than three hours of parade.
Fernando Floirendo, creator and artist of the winning Golden Float also said, they spent close to P100,000 of investment to translate the concept of the float that depicts the history of Cagayan de Oro.
The float was formed into a huge golden fish who thrives in an underwater cave deep down the St. Agustine Cathedral which holds and guards the gold deposits according to the legend of Cagayan de Oro City.
Mayor Constantino Jaraula also said next year’s Golden Float Parade will be bigger with more participation of different agencies. SM bagged the P150,000 cash prize.

Consolacion lass wins Miss Kagay-an tilt

A LASS from Barangay Consolacion was crowned Miss Kagay-an Tourism 2007, in a coronation night marred by gaffes that drew numerous jeers from the jampacked crowd at Limketkai atrium Saturday.
Diana Bagonoc beat other 14 candidates and went home with the coveted title, along with cash prizes that organizers say totaled over half a million pesos in all for all the pageant’s winners.
When the candidates were asked how they can promote Cagayan de Oro’s tourism potentials, Diana spoke of developing further the local tourism industry and blending it with Kagay-anons’ renowned hospitability.
Her answer impressed judges –her win sealed with the crowd’s approving applause.
That contrasted with the crowd’s hostile reaction to some of the candidates’ answers in a Q and A portion early on the preliminary eliminations.
Some candidates–reading from the preset questions they have to pick-up by themselves on-stage–bumbled as if forgetting a memorized line, while others messed-up with their English grammar and apparently stammered with the crowd’s unfriendly reaction.
The crowd was equally unforgiving on one of the pageant’s hosts, who kept on mispronouncing even Cagayan de Oro’s household names.
Meanwhile, Dianne Galenzoga of Upper Carmen bagged the first runner-up title, while Natasha Mills of Bayabas captured the second runner-up award.
The third runner-up title went to Maria Kris Tiu of Bulua, while Kathleen Marie Tabada of Bugo settled for the third runner-up.
Ms. Kagay-an Tourism, formerly known as Miss Cagayan de Oro, is one of the major events of the annual Kagay-an festival, which ends today. It was renamed to make the pageant more attuned to tourism promotion initiatives of the city.
The pageant’s minor awards include the Darling of the Press Award, Best in Swimsuit Award, Best in Talent Award, Best in Evening Gown, Miss Golden Friendship, Miss Avon Girl and Miss Photogenic.
Organizers said more than P500,000 worth of total prizes were given away to winners that included cash prizes, television sets, a notebook computer, digital cameras, travel benefits, cosmetics and gifts certificates.

Cohara to feature ‘Sinuglaw’ in 11th Kumbira
WITH the aim of promoting something new that can promote the city, the Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association (Cohara) will feature “Sinuglaw” as its unique delicacy during the Kumbira 2007, the 11th culinary show and live competitions to be held August 16-18, 2007 at the LimKetKai Atrium in Cagayan de Oro City.
Cohara president Eileen E. San Juan, who is also chairperson, judges committee of the 11th Kumbira 2007, announced this during a press conference held recently.
She said their organization will hold something different from the previous culinary shows for the past ten years and always wanted to see something new.
Kumbira, according to San Juan, is a culinary festival or feast of food, featuring various food and beverage competitions, cooking demonstration by experts in the food industry, and trade exhibits on Hotel and restaurant equipment, supplies and services.
“Sinuglaw” (a mix of sinugba and kinilaw) will be featured during the competition as a delicacy that people from all over the country would appreciate because of the unique taste, using the juice squeezed from the pulp of the “tabon-tabon” fruit (Hydrophytune orbiculatum) as its main ingredient.
Tabon-tabon, she said, is readily available in the city and in the region.
She clarified that “sinuglaw” in other places don’t have the same taste with the locally prepared delicacy.
For the first time, Cohara will give the People’s Choice Awards, where the public will judge entries of local dishes of hotels and restaurants.
These locally prepared dishes include “tabirak espesyal,” “todo pospas” and “sampayna” (dinuguan) festival.
Tabirak was scheduled to be featured on the first day of the festival set Thursday, August 16.
San Juan said the public will have to taste the locally prepared dishes and from there, they will judge the three best prepared food thru secret balloting that would be dropped in identified drop boxes at the venue.
However, the organizers clarified that a fee of P50 will be charged to the participating public who will have the chance to eat and taste all or some of the dishes, who at the same time will become the judge/s of the People’s Choice Awards.
Trophies will be handed to the winners.
San Juan said the Kumbira also has added feature like bed-setting and table-setting for student competition.
Meanwhile, Cohara president Alexis Chaves, who is the overall chairperson of this year’s Kumbira, said their group was organized in 1996 through the initiative of the Department of Tourism regional office 10.
It staged annual culinary festivals aptly called “Kumbira,” that showcased the talents of chefs from different restaurants in the region for the past 10 years, she said.
The organization is getting bigger and bigger and had been consistent in conducting kumbira competitions, where tourism directors from all over the country were invited to witness the yearly festival, she also said.
Cohara is based in Cagayan de Oro, initially with only eight members and has grown to a strong cohesive membership of 24 hotels and restaurants, all accredited by the DOT, she reported.
She explained that although all the members are in competition with each other, they are resolute in their mission to help one another make guests get the service the individual establishments offer.
It has also continuously updated the skills of the respective employees of Cohara members through trainings and workshops with competent lecturers and professionals in the hotel and restaurant industry.
At the same time, Nelia B. Lee, Cohara vice president for hotels, who is the Kumbira’s chairperson for finance, ways and means, said their organization is a non-stock association duly registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
She said they are still accepting members, but they have to be accredited by the DOT first. It is a member of the Hotel and Restaurants Association of the Philippines.
This year’s theme is “Weaving Flavours and Colours of Mindanao.” (Trends)

PMA silent drill set for fiesta
PRECISION of movements, timing and unison in executing traditional dance steps, greetings of hello and good bye and other values embedded in the Filipino culture without sounding the commands.
These are only some of the scenes that go with the rhythm of the drums when cadets of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 2008 will perform the Silent Drill at the Pelaez Sports Center, this city on Aug. 21, 2007 at 2:00 p.m.
About 74 cadets belonging to the class, of whom 9 are women, will take part in the exhibition to give, not only the city residents but also those of the neighboring areas, a glimpse of what it’s like.
“This is our way of bringing PMA closer to the people. We cannot bring them to Baguio City, home of PMA, to see the cadets do the Silent Drill. So we bring the cadets to do it here and give our residents the opportunity to interact with them,” Major Samuel C. Sagun, Chief, Public Affairs Office of the 4th Infantry Division, Philippine Army, said.
Himself a member of PMA “Tanglaw-Diwa” Class of 1992, Sagun said this time the PMA cadets will deviate from the tradition of giving arrival honors exclusively to the President of the country, visiting heads of states, foreign dignitaries and top cabinet officials of the government.
“At about 8:00 a.m. of the same day, Aug. 21, PMA Class 2008 will render such honors to the newly elected Mayor of the City, Atty. Constantino Jaraula at the city’s Kagawasan Kiosk, Divisoria Bandstand, after which those interested to pose for a photo session with the cadets in their full dress gray parade uniforms may be accommodated,” he said.
While in the city, the cadets will be given time to enjoy the ambiance of the malls, join their foster families and see some of the tourist attractions, as well as engage themselves in friendly athletic games with the PMA Alumni Association at 4ID, PA, Camp Evangelista, Barangay Patag.
They will also do school visits to show some visual presentations about the PMA, their life as cadets to include the benefits they enjoy as government scholars and other information about the PMA Cadetship Program.
The visit of PMA Class 2008 is among the preparatory activities lined-up by the local government unit of Cagayan de Oro for the celebration of the Aug. 28 feast of St. Augustine, the city patron saint.(CIO)
