Choose well

Michelle: To know but not to really know is a dilemma we all face. With so many choices and yet with little time to make the choice, we sometimes choose the easier path only to discover that it’s not what we really want.

At one time or another, we might have experienced the turmoil of not knowing, accepting and loving ourselves or valuing our worth. More often than not, doubts, insecurities and lack of self-esteem prevented us from thinking that we could become better persons. But sometimes, it’s the other way round. We know ourselves well enough but we have difficulty in making a choice about a certain person or situation. It helps to have a discerning mind. But oftentimes, our biases or preferences overrule common sense or good judgment.

PROF. Jan de Pater once lectured at Louvain on the Holy Scriptures and its impact on the life of a man. Among his noteworthy examples was a scholar who knew all the books of the bible by heart that if he would push a long and thick needle through the pages of the holy book that biblical scholar would know all the letters, commas and dots the needle had gone through. So amazing and thorough was his expertise on the bible.

Space for one’s self

MY QUEST for freedom triggered my decision to live on my own, away from the shadows of my parents. I was overexcited when I finally moved to a new place, a dilapidated room that I shared with three other male bed spacers.

Sharing a room with strangers was novel but not very inviting. I was not comfortable moving around the room in their presence. I couldn’t take off my boxers and get naked anytime, especially in the hot summer.

Finding purpose in suffering

WE ALL want to live an easy life, a life free of problems. But God has his own reasons for letting things happen, reasons that we have to decipher to understand and appreciate life.

In the 18 years of my journey in life, I and my family have experienced a burden that we thought was insurmountable.
