Volunteerism: the trend among Filipino youth

Volunteerism, a trend over the past years has even become more popular today.

One organization that helps the less fortunate children is Tsinelas. Its volunteers aim to share knowledge with the less fortunate kids, especially the orphans.

HE HAD let me go.

We were sitting side by side in the silent chapel. It was midday. In the distance I thought I heard the bell ring for the second time, and the startled students rush like disturbed bees for their next class. I could hear the leaves rustling and banaba petals fluttering as a gentle wind passed. I heard so many things that I’d usually ignore. As the person beside me finally told me what he kept a secret for the past two years, it seemed that everything was in a vacuum, save for those happening outside that lonely chapel.

Rewarding loyalty

A HEALTHY topic up for a spirited debate is on succession planning and whether or not it is more cost effective if an organization develops managers from the ranks or join the frenzied talent search outside all the time. Proponents of the former can easily cite the tremendous morale boost if people are given the opportunity to rise from the ranks. Easily, the topic is tied up to loyalty and how it is a much valued trait to a number of companies.

That fiesta feeling

FOR about six months, the gusty winds came and went. Rain in torrents flooded the countryside and the cities, the farms and the streets, in contrast to the “gentle rain that falleth from heaven upon the earth beneath,” as Shakespeare described in one of his plays.

But one day, toward the end of August last year, my hometown of Carmen celebrated the fiesta of St. Augustine with a beautiful sunrise, a blue, cloudless day, and a refreshing breeze from the sea. Even if it had rained, it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. Sunshine was in our hearts as a feast is a symbol of unity and love among families, neighbors and friends.

So off we headed, 41 kilometers to the north, past the industrial hub of Mandaue, Danao, Consolacion, Liloan and Compostela.
