TECHNICALLY, every person undergoes 14 to 15 years of long and painstaking education. That’s over 130,000 hours of classes, exams, and regular burning of the midnight oil—sort of like a self-inflicted kind of suffering.
Well, yes, elementary and high school may have proved to be a snap, but ten years of it does not serve the purpose of nothing. It prepares us for something else, something called higher education—college.

SOME 30 to 35 years ago, I was the lone and perhaps the first Filipino to work at an oil drilling rig. Though I was hired in Texas, I couldn’t work in the mainland because I was an alien.
And so they sent me to different countries outside the United States where the company operated some oil drilling rigs. My work schedule was 28/14–that means I have to work for 28 days before I could take 14 days off with pay. With a round-trip airline ticket on business class to any country of my choice, plus $28-a-day pocket money for 14 days, I netted around $392.
