UP Diliman’s cancer tracker wins BPI-DOST ‘Best Project of the Year’ Awards

A POTENTIALLY groundbreaking study that could place the Philippines on the global map as a source of green fluorescent protein from coral reef to track the growth of cancer cells in the human body bagged the much-coveted �Best Project of the Year� title in the 2008 BPI-DOST Science Awards held January 18, 2008 in Makati City.The winning project was developed by Carla Gisela Ysabel P. Concepcion, a graduating BS Molecular Biology and Biotechnology student from the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman.

A joint undertaking of the BPI Foundation, Inc. and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the �Best Project of the Year� Awards aims to recognize and provide incentives to graduating students in selected colleges/universities who excel in specialized fields of science, namely: mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science and biology.

The winning project was chosen for its relevance and impact to knowledge advancement, its viability for commercial production and marketability, the originality and uniqueness of the study, and its adherence to scientific soundness.

A New Start

“A NEW year, a new start in life.”

A line so overused, misused and abused, it’s enough to make me want to spoon out my eyeballs every time I hear the butchered line.

Why does a new year always compel practically everybody to start claiming that they’re getting a new start in their lives, that they’re turning a new leaf, or that it’s a new beginning for them?

Michelle: How time flies when one�s having fun! Or should I say how fun when time flies. Can you imagine that it�s 2008 already? It seemed only like a few months ago when I literally welcomed 2007 with a bang. After last year�s whirlwind of activities that saw many changes in each of our lives, it�s again another year of endless possibilities.
