Staying Healthy in School

ONE month has passed since students went back to school, getting back to jotting notes, reading chapter after every chapter of textbooks and piling papers up on your study table. And now, the month of July is about to start, and so is the Nutrition Month celebration.

It’s time for some reality check, and find out whether you are keeping yourself healthy in school or your health condition is deteriorating while studying and reading books during the wee hours of the morning. There surely is no better time to change your eating habits and lifestyle than now. As we all observe Nutrition Month this July, it would help to strike a good balance between keeping a healthy lifestyle and playing your role as a student. While you study and work hard to get those high marks, it would be good to avoid getting sick and having to get re-admission slips from your professors and from the dean’s office.

The Word Is Not Enough

NOPE, the title is not a typo error of the ’99 James Bond hit.

Zup is about to lay down some interesting facts for students about a website, and why I personally think that it is the world’s way of educating the new generation when “the word is not enough.”

Apparently these days, kids are bored with paperback dictionaries. So perhaps, the techno-geeks of present constructed this website, http://visual.merriam-webster.com, to appeal to a younger audience.

The great thing about today’s technological advances is that it allows the merging of different media to create one effective medium. Not only does this site combine the dictionary with visual images to go with every definition, a sound sample is also available per item to give you an audio example and teach you how to pronounce the word correctly.

Freshman again

I AM officially out of college.

I mean, not since today, but since March, and I’m only feeling how official it is last week. I feel it when I’m seeing hopeful freshmen wait by the school’s entrance for their new-found college friends. I’m feeling it when my friends tell me about their jobs (or lack thereof). I’m feeling it when younger people find out that I’ve graduated and they ask for advice, and I stick my chin up as I sagely offer them some vague statement that makes me sound so wise. I especially feel it when I sit in my law classes.

Yes, I’m taking up law. Yes, that’s another four years of fun-education-or-academic-torture-take-your-pick. And that’s another year of being a freshman yet again, a greenhorn in a competitive environment surrounded by would-be sharks. (No offense to my fellow students. You know the jokes.)

S’cool’ Time!

THE warmest time of the year, when the sun is sooo up there and getting a tan is a fad, is almost over. Flip flops will undeniably be used less, and we’ll be digging to find that old pair of black shoes. Others could be in malls right now, shopping for a new one. Siblings sun and sand will become cousins for a while and school and you will be as tight as best-friends-for-life.

But hey, it’s not that bad! Good thing we don’t need to find solace because we can find a zillion reasons to be excited about school. And the timing is just perfect, as we are about to cross the line between boredom and missing the people we study with. What could be more exciting than seeing our crush in school, our funny or weird yet worth-listening to professors and clinging to our barkadas and making a fuss about the fact that we are studying. Those are just a few paradoxical reasons to go back to school.

Speed Cubers

IT LOOKS like Speedracer is not the only one playing with speed.

Meet the “speedcubers,” a group of guys with a flair for solving the colorful Rubik’s cube in less than half a minute.

First on our list of speed-loving cubers is the competitive 20-year-old Norman Mejares.

“Speedcubing was just a hobby,” he said. “But when I saw my friends doing it, I also wanted to compete. I had to be good enough to compete.” Norman, an engineering student of the University of San Carlos (USC), hopes to take speedcubing to another level someday. “My goal is to solve all the cubes blindfolded,” he said.
