In the movie Ice Age, dodos were plenty. Today, however, they are considered extinct.
When we say “dead as a dodo”, we mean that a person is like a dead man, or someone that has been forgotten. The phrase was taken from a bird that lived sometime ago, the dodo.
Dodo is a flightless bird from the island of Mauritus. It stood 3 feet tall and weighed about 20 kilograms. It is related to pigeons and doves, fed on fruits and nested on ground.
Dodos are believed to be extinct since 17th century. Its extinction is believed to be a result of human activity.
The origin of the name dodo is uncertain. One possibility is that it came from the bird’s own call, a pigeony sound like “doo-doo.”
