TV networks can take cue from gender-sensitive Davao

MANILA -- Local television can take a cue from Davao on how to protect women's and children's rights, a senator said Tuesday.
"We have so many talent shows and contests where kids are made to dress and gyrate like sexy dancers thinking that it's 'cute' or 'funny.' But in gender-sensitive cities like Davao, the mayor has long banned the swimsuit portion in their annual Mutya ng Dabaw search," Senator Pia Cayetano said.
She said the example set by Davao City can be adopted in talent shows, television shows, and advertising.
This, after accusations of child abuse on national TV prompted a Senate committee to set hearings to review laws protecting the rights of children.
Cayetano said the Senate Committee on Youth, Women, and Family Relations has to update the laws "to remain relevant in our times." (Jonathan de Santos/Sunnex)
