Lawmaker: Teodoro disqualified for Ombudsman post

MANILA -- Citing the 1987 Constitution, House justice committee chairman Niel Tupas Jr. said defeated presidential candidate Gilbert Teodoro cannot be a candidate for the Ombudsman post.
In a text message to Sun.Star, Tupas said: “Gibo might be disqualified because under the Constitution, the Ombudsman must not have been a candidate for any elective office in the immediately preceding election.”
Teodoro was defeated in the May 2010 presidential elections by his cousin, President Benigno Aquino III.
On Wednesday, Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago said Aquino can appoint Teodoro as the new head of the Office of the Ombudsman to replace resigned Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
