MANILA -- The girls who energize the stage during half-time basketball breaks and brought fan experience at Madison Square Garden in New York City will be in Manila this weekend.

The New York Knicks Dancers will join four-time NBA champion Horace Grant to open the first NBA three-on-three basketball tournament to be staged Southeast Asia from July 1 to 3 at the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City.

Filipino basketball fans will easily take a shine to the New York Knicks City Dancers because – besides being one of the NBA’s most exciting dance teams — their lead dancer is Filipina.

Michelle Harris, KCD director of Entertainment, hails from Balayan, Batangas. Her mother’s surname is Dino and her father’s family name is Marella.

Now based in Chicago, she oversees the dance teams’ overall entertainment as well as all dance team branding.

She started with the Knicks as a Knicks City Dancer about eight years ago and worked her way up to directing them and all the entertainment for the team.

Harris is a graduate of the New York University’s Stern School of Business, with a college degree in Marketing and Management.

Dancing with Michelle on the New York dance team are six other members, namely: team captain Amanda, Christine, Maria, Melissa, Sarahbeth and Stephanie.

Grant and the lady dancers will make appearances and interact with fans through clinics and community events.

Current All-Stars and legends from the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) will also attend the event and take part in the activities. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
