Aquino urged to issue EO over SC decision on Luisita case

MANILA -- A party-list lawmaker on Friday dared President Benigno Aquino III to use his presidential powers and order the Supreme Court (SC) to review its decision over the Hacienda Luisita case.
SC justices earlier voted to revoke the stock distribution plan and ordered the Department of Agrarian Reform to conduct a new referendum on the issue.
“I challenge Aquino to stand up and be counted as a President of consequence and do what is just, do what is right. I call on Aquino to issue an Executive Order and order the Supreme Court to immediately review its decision calling for a renewed referendum,” Gabriela Representative Emmi De Jesus said in a press statement.
De Jesus said it is only right that President Aquino turn his back on his family’s “dubious” claim over the Hacienda Luisita.
“As President, (he should) act in favor of the downtrodden farmers who have sacrificed so much, including the lives of their loved ones,” she added. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
