Aquino receives foreign ministers of New Zealand, Canada

MANILA -- President Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday received in Malacañang two foreign ministers from New Zealand and Canada who were both invited by Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario.

Aquino first received Foreign Minister New Zealand Murray McCully at the Music Room of the Malacañang Palace where they discussed the advancement of economic ties and various areas of cooperation between Philippines and New Zealand.

Indonesia scrambles to end Asean rift over sea

RH bill author: House lacks political will, not time

Roadside bomb kills 12 in Pakistan

PARACHINAR, Pakistan — A minibus carrying Shiite Muslims hit a roadside bomb in northwestern Pakistan on Wednesday, killing 12 of them in the country's latest apparent sectarian attack.

The incident took place shortly after the victims left Spai, a predominantly Shiite village in the Orakzai tribal area, said local government official Jamil Khan. They were headed for the nearby district of Kohat, he said.

Senator: Lack of Asean agreement over sea row alarming

MANILA -- Senator Loren Legarda expressed disappointment over the failure of the Foreign Ministers' Meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) to agree on a joint statement on China's activities in the West Philippine Sea.

Cambodia, this year's summit chairperson, blocked the Philippines' move last week to include the issue about the ongoing standoff with China over the resource-rich Panatag (Scarborough) shoal. It is the first time in its 45 years of existence that Asean has failed to issue a statement regarding a pressing matter at the conclusion of its meetings.

Needles in airplane sandwiches probed

ATLANTA — The FBI is investigating after needles were found in turkey sandwiches on Delta Air Lines flights from Amsterdam to the United States.

Delta says what appear to be sewing needles were found in five sandwiches Sunday. One passenger on a flight to Minneapolis was injured.

2 children found positive for enterovirus

MANILA (Updated 10:22 a.m.) -- Two Filipino children were found positive for enterovirus but the Department of Health (DOH) is still conducting tests to confirm whether they contracted the more dangerous strain of the virus, Enterovirus 71 (EV-71).

The health department recently intensified security among travelers following the deaths of 56 children in Cambodia due to EV-71.

Mexico says 67 journalists killed since 2006

Prosecutor for crimes against freedom of speech Laura Angelina Borbolla says she is aware of only one case involving the slaying of a journalist that reached sentencing.

Myanmar's Suu Kyi plans trip to US in September

NAYPYITAW, Myanmar — Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi says she will accept an award in the United States in September, setting up a new round of international accolades for the Nobel Peace laureate and former political prisoner who was unable to leave her home country for more than two decades.

Suu Kyi was greeted enthusiastically by world leaders and human rights activists during her recent trips to Thailand and Europe, and the US trip announced Tuesday likely will garner the same level of attention as she re-emerges on the world stage.
