600 soldiers deployed to Basilan
Sunday, July 29, 2012 - 04:21 p.m.MANILA -- Military officials said about 600 soldiers are being deployed to hunt down gunmen who killed 10 soldiers last week in fierce clashes and ambuscades in Basilan province in Mindanao.
The military said a C-130 plane was used to transport the soldiers Saturday to Zamboanga City prior to their deployment to Basilan, where 10 soldiers were killed and several others were wounded by dozens of gunmen in clashes on Thursday.

Moderate quake shakes central Myanmar

The US Geological Survey says the quake had a magnitude of 5.7 and struck at a depth of 68.4 kilometers (42.5 miles). Myanmar's meteorological and seismic agency put the magnitude at 5.8.

The quake, whose epicenter was located 27 kilometers northeast of Cateel, Davao Oriental, occurred around 11:04 a.m. Sunday, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
