Public told: Cooperate with LGUs on storm warnings

MANILA (Updated 4:50 p.m.) -- Residents in Northern Luzon currently on the path of Tropical Storm Gener (international codename: Saola) have been advised to heed the warnings of local and provincial disaster risk management councils.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said all concerned government units have already been alerted in case of any eventuality.

600 soldiers deployed to Basilan

MANILA -- Military officials said about 600 soldiers are being deployed to hunt down gunmen who killed 10 soldiers last week in fierce clashes and ambuscades in Basilan province in Mindanao.

The military said a C-130 plane was used to transport the soldiers Saturday to Zamboanga City prior to their deployment to Basilan, where 10 soldiers were killed and several others were wounded by dozens of gunmen in clashes on Thursday.

Abu Sayyaf leader nabbed in Tawi-Tawi

10 domestic flights cancelled

MANILA -- Two leading airlines in the country cancelled some of their flights Sunday due to bad weather brought by Tropical Storm Gener, television reports said.

Cebu Pacific cancelled six of its flights to and from Caticlan and two others bound for San Jose and back.

Moderate quake shakes central Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar -- A moderate earthquake has shaken central Myanmar near the Indian border.

The US Geological Survey says the quake had a magnitude of 5.7 and struck at a depth of 68.4 kilometers (42.5 miles). Myanmar's meteorological and seismic agency put the magnitude at 5.8.

4 charged for cyclist protest outside Olympic Park

HIV transmission through gay sex on the rise since 2008

MALES-having-sex-with-males (MSM) causing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has outgrown heterosexual contact over the last five years in the Philippines, a report by the Department of Health (DOH) showed Sunday.

“There has been a shift in the predominant trend of sexual transmission from heterosexual contact to males having sex with other males,” said the Philippine HIV and Aids Registry report as of June 2012.

Magnitude 5 quake hits Davao Oriental

CEBU CITY -- State seismologists recorded Sunday a magnitude 5.0 earthquake hitting Davao Oriental province.

The quake, whose epicenter was located 27 kilometers northeast of Cateel, Davao Oriental, occurred around 11:04 a.m. Sunday, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Registration of voters to resume Wednesday

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) is set to resume on Wednesday the nationwide conduct of registration of voters and validation of registration records in preparation for the 2013 midterm elections.

Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes said individuals can register from August 1 to October 31 for them to be able to vote in the next elections.
