Janet Jackson to produce transgender documentary

LOS ANGELES — Janet Jackson has signed on as an executive producer of a documentary on the lives of transgender people around the world.

New York-based Brainchild Films announced Monday that Jackson was working on "Truth" and would do some of the on-camera interviews. The documentary begins production this summer and will focus on the lives and struggles of transgender persons.

Britain's Prince Philip in hospital, misses jubilee concert

LONDON — British music royalty was set to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II on Monday with a Buckingham Palace concert featuring acts from throughout her 60-year-reign. But the queen's husband, Prince Philip, will miss the concert after being hospitalized with a bladder infection.

Palace officials said the prince, who will turn 91 on Saturday, was taken to the King Edward VII Hospital in London from Windsor Castle on Monday as a precaution and will remain under observation for a few days.

Aquino to meet Jessica Sanchez in US

MANILA – President Benigno Aquino III will have a chance to meet American Idol runner-up Filipina-Mexican Jessica Sanchez during his upcoming visit to the United States.

Presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said the President will be meeting the 16-year-old singer before he heads back to the country.

House to extend session for approval of sin tax bill

MANILA – The House of Representatives is considering extending its plenary session until Thursday this week for the approval of the sin tax bill, a proposed law certified as urgent by President Benigno Aquino III.

“Our target here is to finish everything by Wednesday but if we are unable to do that, we will just ask the senators to concur if we hold sessions until Friday… There are number of bills that are (pending), the most important one is the so-called sin tax,” House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. told reporters in an ambush interview.

Applicants for Chief Justice 'should submit bank waivers'

MANILA (3rd Update, 4:34 p.m.) -- Candidates for the position of Chief Justice vacated by Renato Corona last week will be required to open their bank deposits for scrutiny, the vetting body Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) said Monday.

The requirement came after Corona himself called on public officials in his impeachment trial that they should also do an outright waiver of confidentiality for the sake of transparency and accountability.

Small businesses urged to register with trade department

MANILA – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) urged on Monday micro-businesses, particularly “tiangge” and “sari-sari” stores, to register with the Philippine Business Registry (PBR).

DTI Undersecretary Zenaida Maglaya said it would be better for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to legalize their business so they can avail themselves of the government's benefits.

JBC meets to discuss process for new Chief Justice

Lawmakers: DepEd preempts Congress on K+12

MANILA (Updated 2:48 p.m.) -- Party-list lawmakers slammed the Department of Education (DepEd) for implementing the K+12 program without an enabling law from Congress.

“The DepEd has essentially tied the hands of Congress that K+12 must definitely be passed because it had already started its implementation. How can this not be a constitutional infringement of the highest order?” lawyer Terry Ridon, national president and general counsel of Kabataan party-list, said.

Aquino leaves for UK

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III left the country Monday to embark on a historic three-day official visit to the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

Aquino departed via Philippines Airlines Flight 001 at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 2 at 1:30 Monday afternoon. His UK trip will be from June 4 to 6.
