CEBU CITY -- Bloggers in the Visayas are set to converge Saturday for the 2011 Visayas Blogging Summit (VBS) at the SM City here.
With the theme “Blogging and Beyond”, the VBS this year will highlight the value of blogging as a potent tool in community development and in encouraging community participation.
Ruben Licero, VBS chairman, said Wednesday that the event aims to professionalize bloggers by providing them tips from world-class speakers.
He said the event will also teach bloggers to gain money out of responsible blogging and provide them world-class talks that will better improve their craft as social media users.
Chris Ducker, chief executive officer of the Live2Sell Group of Companies, who will be the keynote speaker in the event, said he will focus on the basics of blogging.
Ducker said someone should begin blogging with business in mind and monetize blogs in the right way.
"A lot of people think blogging the easiest way to make money but it’s not, it’s a long way to make money through blogging," he said.
Other speakers are Janette Toral, community owner of the DigitalFilipono Club and author of several books on social media and the Internet; Joanne Apat, director of Online Marketing and eBusiness Consulting at Gwion Limited Hong Kong; Globe’s Social Media Manager Coy Caballes; and bloggers Vernon Joseph Go and Evanjohnn Mendoza.
Fleire May Castro, membership head of the secretariat of VBS, said that as of Wednesday morning, 236 participants have registered to join in the event.
Licero said the Cebu Bloggers Society, which organized the event, invited 500 participants.
The VBS will be the biggest and grandest event in the Visayas based on the number of participants, sponsors, organizers and speakers, he added.
"I can say this is the biggest event because in previous summits, we only had at least 100 participants, but here, we invited 500 participants," Licero said. "We also have lot of sponsors, which put a high stake at social media and blogging."
The summit will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the SM City Cebu. (Tashuana Alemania/Sunnex)
