Comelec to implement gun ban in Zambales
Friday, January 6, 2012
IBA, Zambales -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said gun ban will be implemented in Olongapo City and 13 other towns in the province in time for the start of the special elections in the second district.
The special election was requested by the Provincial Government to replace Representative Antonio Diaz, who died last year.
Based on the Comelec guidelines, any private individual, incumbent officials or political candidates are prohibited to carry firearms and hire armed personnel during the congressional election.
The special election will start by the filing of certificate of candidacy on January 16 to 18.
Campaign period is set on January 19 to February 2 of this year and the election will take place on February 4.
Among those who are running for the seat are Provincial Administrator Omar Ebdane, son of incumbent Governor Jun Ebdane; Cheryl Deloso, daughter of former governor Amor Deloso; and Rica Diaz, one of the daughters of the late congressman Diaz.
It is unclear if the election will use the PCOS machine, or if the Comelec will revert back to the old election system. (Anthony Bayarong/Sunnex)
